My OL ponderings...warning TLDR worthy

Dec 5, 2018, 2:29 PM

So all this talk about lack of OL's this class got me wondering. So far what I have is:

OL available for next year (Camp weight):

(betting he stays as Graduate) https://www.tigernet.com/player/Gage-Cervenka-364
6-3/325

(betting he stays as Graduate) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Zach-Giella-2181
6-6/315

(likely stays, senior next year) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Tremayne-Anchrum-2389
6-2/310

(60% stays, senior next year) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/John-Simpson-2335
6-4/330

(Likely stays, senior next year) (https://www.tigernet.com/player/Sean-Pollard-395
6-5/315

(RS Jr) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Chandler-Reeves-2405
6-6/295

(RS Jr) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Cade-Stewart-2488
6-3/310

(RS Sp) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Matt-Bockhorst-2479
6-4/310

(RS Sp) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Noah-DeHond-2383
6-7/310

(RS Sp) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Blake-Vinson-2346
6-4/285

(RS Fs) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Jordan-McFadden-3094
6-3/300

(Sp) https://www.tigernet.com/recruit/Jackson-Carman-2550
6-5/345

My guess for starters/back up next year:
LT-Carman/Dehond (if he finally gets healthy)
LG-Simpson/Brockhorst
C-Cervenka/(not sure who would back up, Stewart?)
RG-Pollard/Stewart/Mcfadden
RT-Anchrum/Reeves/Vinson

I see Rayburn as possibly getting into the mix as guard as well in 2019

2020 Season
LT-Carman/Dehond
LG-Brockhorst/Rayburn
C-?
RG-Stewart/Mcfadden
RT-Reeves/Vison

I can see us adding a lot of OL's in the 2020 class if Rayburn is our only take in 19, but I wouldn't be shocked if the coaches already have some backup offers to give if we miss on both Webb and Putnum
What say y'all? Especially you @quozzel

It would really really suck if Simpson leaves

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would but of all the back-up OL, I think Bockhorst is the

best and think he should start. Not sure why we can't start both him and Simpson at the guard positions, with Cervenka at center, Carman at LT and Anchrum/Pollard at RT.

OL will be fine in 2019, but.....

Dec 5, 2018, 3:11 PM

2020 is the question. The 2020 team is going to be absolutely loaded at every other position (minus maybe DT).

Lawrence (5*) in his 3rd, and final, year at the helm with Lyn-J (maybe ETN) in the backfield, throwing to Tee (probably not), Ross (5*), Ngata (5*), Kendrick (5*), and Ladson (5*). With a nice pass catching TE in Galloway.

Defense will have XT (5*), KJ Henry (5*), Pinckney, Shaq Smith (5*), Mike Jones, Crouch (5*), Booth (5*), Goodrich, McMichael, Joseph Charleston, etc.

It's going to be far and away the most talented roster we've ever seen at Clemson.

I think Dehond, Reeves, Carman, and Vinson all have the potential to be good tackles - but these guys need to be all "hits" and we have almost no room for attrition. Bockhorst in the interior will be All-ACC before he leaves. I believe Putnam would be the starting center in 2020 if we land him (and that would be huge).

But man, it could be so fun to watch was Lawrence is capable of in 2 years with the weapons he'll have if he has some time in the pocket.

I honestly think Lawrence replicates his idol Peyton Manning and stays all 4 years. Unlike many college athletes, his family seems comfortable financially and without the need for the NFL money.

Well that brings up the question

Dec 5, 2018, 3:47 PM

Will we have another Kelly Bryant situation on our hands? Can he fend off DJ Uiagalelei? haha it's going to be fun to watch these guys.

Re:My OL ponderings...warning TLDR worthy- I expect McFadden

Dec 5, 2018, 3:51 PM

to start as he already has a building on campus w his name on it. I doubt that happened by accident. ;)

We have some guys coming in plus Tyler Davis should commit to Clemson very soon

I just don't understand why OL has been a black hole for us

Dec 5, 2018, 5:50 PM

Other than Simpson & Carman, I don't see an guy who can make an impact next year...if they were capable, it seems that they would have already made that move to take over a position. It sure seems to me that Hyatt was no where near what his awards represented, but that's just a blind opinion. To keep losing studs to Georgia HAS to stop now or T-Law will never get the chance to be the superstar that he is equipped to be without protection.
