Look What Golf Did For Me

Mar 10, 2020, 7:16 PM

There is a post re the Tigers winning the tournament and the top three were Tigers. Congratulations to the Tigers!!!!!!

About 15 years ago I was playing the first hole at Oconee. My tee shot trickled off the fairway into a patch of tall Bermuda. When I went to search for my ball, I stepped in a hole and fell down. Yep, got a torn rotator cuff but was also lucky, if my foot had not come out of my shoe I would have probably had a broken leg. The hole was where an old pine stump had rotted out and the Bermuda grass had grown over the hole, shielding the hole from view.

I tried to hit the ball to the green and I knew something was wrong. Picked up my ball and headed for the club house. Called the doctor and went to see him. He sent me to get an Xray and, sure enough, there was the tear. He explained my options, none of which I jumped at. However, he did prescribe some steroids which relieved the pain. To make a long story short, I quit golf.

Late last year my shoulder developed a pain and I had trouble moving my left arm. Went to the doctor in January and he said I had a frozen shoulder and recommended rehab, so I've been in rehab for the past 5 weeks. The pain is gone now but I have very little strength in my left arm. I must be getting old.

If it’s any constellation Joe, I know what you mean and I’m ‘only’ 78. I gave up golf for other reasons! I played with a good friend once and after hitting several drives into the lake he suggested I hit an old ball! I told him I never had one.

Actually Forest, you may have added another one to the lexicon of tnet jargon.

(Or you can just take it with a grade of slaw ?? )

I can assure you that you are on the right track. Old age is not, definitely not, for the faint of heart, but I ain't quitting!

There are two signs on the outside of the Excel Rehab facility in Clemson. One reads, "Occupational Therapy", the other reads, "Physical Therapy". I honestly believe they are trying to rehab me back to a level so I can go back to work and that's not what I had in mind.

Golf is a grand hobby!

There is nothing so satisfying as a great day in nature - drinking beer, smoking cigars and having laughs with friends. As for me, I keep score by counting how many more golf balls I find while I’m in the woods looking for the one I hit. I don’t think I’ve bought any golf balls in 20 years!

Good luck with the rehab Joe!

Besides the cigars, your game sounds like mine.

Mr. Joe you'd probably not have torn that rotator while falling down into that hole had you've kept your left elbow straight and your head down .

I'm certain that's how I heard it .

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!
