June 25. 1950

Jun 25, 2019, 2:20 PM

War broke out in Korea as forces from the communist North invaded the South.

On that date, little did I realize I would soon receive an invitation for active participation. About two months later, in late August, I received orders to report to the Air Force Base at Jackson, MS for my physical. About two weeks later a US Postal employee entered my office at Stoneville, MS and asked if I were Joe21. I said "yes" and then he had me sign for a registered letter. The return address was from the "Department of the Army".

When I opened that letter on a Tuesday, about mid-afternoon, I was absolutely shocked. The orders read, "You are to report for active duty at Fort Hood, Texas, next Monday morning". (I don't remember the exact date) In the letter was a telephone number to call, which I did. I asked for a two week delay and the answer I got was not one of compassion ---- "It is imperative that you report as ordered". On that next Monday morning I was at Fort Hood, Texas, but I can assure you I was not a happy camper.

Ok Joe, I'm hooked, at least for episode 2. That was a pretty good intro.

Joe, I recently acquired a pistol that was seized as a weapon of war from a captured Korean fighter during the Korean War. It is a short barrel pistol that was designed for in close fighting. The gun was made in Czechoslovakia. Did you happen to see a pistol similar to this ?

Joe - were you sent over with Task Force Smith?

No. I was beginning to believe I was sent over with Task Force Joe. I'll post a follow-up to my original post in a day or two.

My uncle flew a C97 in Korea. He was an amazing guy and had unbelievably amazing children. I really miss him.
