It isn't just Muschamp's $20 Mil buyout that has SCAR up...

Nov 20, 2019, 7:24 PM

Schitt's Creek this year. It was less than 10 months ago that Tanner and the UofSC BoT handed out money like it was going out of style.

This is after a 7-5 season that included a 5th straight losses to their biggest rival (By 21 points) along with 5 straight losses to UGA, Texas A&M, and...Kentucky. This year required SCAR to add a final game against Akron to have a 7th win. This was a year they were picked by the media to be the 2nd best team in the SEC East and finished 5th. And finally, this is the same team that was shut out 28-0 by a "lowly" ACC team picked to finish last in the ACC-Coastal division in their bowl game.

Not only was Muschamp's contract extended to 2024 with a $20 Million buyout but Tanner and the USC BoT decided this was a great time to make their football coaching staff the only one in the SEC with two $1 Million+ coordinators. Offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon, in his first year in that capacity, received a $350,000 per year raise to $1 million a year and a 3 year contract for an offense that finished 57th in the nation. Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson (Already making $1.2 Million a year) received a one-year contract extension to extend his deal through the 2021 season for a defense that finished 68th in the nation. Finally, QB coach Dan Werner received a $200,000 raise to increase his annual compensation to $700,000 per year through the 2020 season.

SCAR would owe upwards of $30 million dollars buying out this entire staff 10 months into their new contracts and that doesn't include what would likely be another $5 million buyout of any decent head coach they can find out there. SCAR, Tanner and the BoT is in deep, deep trouble and doubling down on their bet. This is desperation mode.

Only shows how they settle for mediocrity.

You just can't make this stuff up. STUPIDITY is alive and well in cola. Some things never change, and it makes me chuckle.

Wow. Awesome post. This is the real picture.

Just goes to show you: ALL IN is not the primary Daboism.

That would be "Surround yourself with the right people." THEN you go ALL IN.

Otherwise you end up like Tanner and SoKar: all in somethin' you don't want to be in with people you don't want to be with.

...plus HR and recruiting expenses.

Nov 20, 2019, 8:20 PM

Last time, didn't they finally settle on their eighth choice?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seems like that's why firing Tanner is the prudent thing

Nov 20, 2019, 8:22 PM

right? Keep the football staff one more year, at least, but hire a new AD. Tanner doesn't have any buyout clause, but he sure showed he makes bad/dumb decisions.

Tanner will have a nice golden parachute when he gets run...

Nov 20, 2019, 8:40 PM

out of the AD position. Probably even offered a cushy job in the athletic department just like Spurrier. That's how SCAR works.

Many Gamecock fans have said they need to spend more money to get a name coach. Appears to me they need to spend less money and get a coach that can coach. No head coach has been hired away from the Gamecocks in over 125 years of futility. Known as the graveyard for coaches, who would want to go there?

i think you are right but this puts them in a spot even more delicate: what coach, even an up and comer, wants to work at a place where he knows to BoT has demonstrated poor judgment in the way they handle hiring and financial decisions? think about it; tanner, the entire staff of football coaches and the school's president... just to mention a few.

they got themselves in a spot for sure and it is one born of pure arrogance.

It's a great time to be a coach at UofSC. You are fixing to get PAID to sit on your ### and do nothing, where as you were having to go to work and do nothing! Only losers in this situation are the wives of these men who will now have to listen to them tell how great they are all day!

Re: coaches' wives are the only 'losers'??

Nov 21, 2019, 7:05 PM

Be careful!

When fans wanted to know if Coach Mus could recruit, he used Mrs Mus as his proof of success! She is his résumé. You be careful what else you call the wives.

Besides 'married to a classless man'.

Maybe he needs to go recruit Alaska.

.....Just sayin’.
