You're trying to accomplish something (draw a foul) and there's not really a risk to it.

Dropping the ball before the goal line serves no purpose and wipes a touchdown off the board for your team

Nope. It’s the most selfish act you can perform on a football field. You are telling everybody it’s more important for you to draw attention to yourself than for your team to score a TD.
