Is the cold war returning?

Mar 26, 2019, 4:38 PM

Seems like the kind of thing we used to read daily back in the 80's.

Nahh....Russia is Saudi Arabia with trees..

Third world economy with a first world military. All they have is oil and gas.

Real threat is China. They are developing missiles to take out our aircraft carriers and satellites that threaten our GPS satellites. Very concerning.

China's capability to take out our GSP satellites is a real and scary threat, but rest assured we do have the means to retaliate!!! So I to would say we could be close to a cold war with China more than any other country!!!

I agree. China's economy is also far more on a par with ours, whereas Russia's is about a twelfth the size of ours.

The other big problem is China's tech, particularly supercomputers. They've out-invested us in that area and have quite a bit of supercomputer capacity on us...they're also about two years ahead of us in terms of 5G tech...which is ironic because most of their technology they pretty much just flat stole from Western companies anyhow.

The other big issue most don't realize with the Chinese is their insularity. They've always referred to themselves as the "Middle Kingdom" - they regard themselves as the center of the world, and while they have rarely been expansionistic, preferring instead to wait out their enemies behind their walls and bunker in, there's signs that's changing...including their building of a true blue-water navy capable of projecting power outside their territorial waters.

The other problem is that they're fundamentally racist, or at least trying incredibly hard to be homogeneous. They're pretty much displacing anyone who isn't Han Chinese - like, say, the Nepalese - and slowly but steadily pushing them out. And if you strip their primary goals to their essentials, what they really want to do is advance the interests of Han Chinese, and in a very focused and controlled society.

Another aspect of dealing with the Chinese is that they're patient. They didn't have any particular problems, say, leasing Hong Kong to the English for 99 years...to the English that lease was forever, to the Chinese it was just a good investment. And when they got it back they were handed a technological and economic bonanza that jump-started their whole economy.

They very much play the long game.

The Russians are a shadow of what they were as the USSR. They're a bully, true, but they're also technologically and economically inferior and they no longer have 55,000 tanks poised on the German border ready to roll over the West like they once did...in fact they don't even have 5,500 tanks anymore. It's interesting that Putin, not Jeff Bezos (as is commonly asserted), is probably the world's richest man...worth probably $250 billion dollars, most of which is stashed in Western banks, and most of which he flat stole from his own country. That does not demonstrate a great deal of faith even on Putin's part in the long-term prospects of his own government.

Of course, the Russians and the Chinese are also cooperating to a level nobody has seen before. They're clearly quite keen on knocking the USA off its current perch as the world's Alpha Dog, no doubt.

Unfortunately Bill Clinton when President sent Super Computers to China which saved them years of research and development. On too of that he shared all our missile technology with them.
The guy was traitorous. With Hillary selling access to her servers with special access program intelligence, (higher than top secret),China has closed the gap in jet fighter technology.
Both Clintons should be hung.
Hopefully we have secret weapons systems that the Russians and Chinese don't have. Maybe we're trying to bait them into attacking us so we can justify blowing them up and remaining the sole super power. If both scenarios are wrong we're in a world of trouble.

It happens a lot. US planes are always in the Baltic,

Mar 26, 2019, 4:56 PM

which is like a Russian plane being in the Gulf of Mexico.

Plenty of reasons to worry about escalation, but this isn't really new.

There's something in these hills.

They are never inside "American airspace."

There are technicalities involved with this topic. They are almost always closer to Russia than they are the US. The same is nowhere close to being true for us.

Obama is the only person who thought the Russians aren't still an enemy to the US. I think Hillary knew it, but she also wanted to get rich off the ruskies

Most incredible thing about that is that the B52s are still getting it done.
