I don’t want to be the mean one but I just wish everybody was brighter because it’s very simple to understand. I don’t understand what is so hard about it. Figuring out who was what seed before the tournament due to the Virginia/Notre Dame tiebreaker was more difficult than figuring out the format play

Ok I'll go to ACC.com and actually try now . lol . My big question is can a one team advance with a loss and another not . Seems weird that if we lost we would have been eliminated last night as a #2 seed

The format is as follows: 4 Pools of 3 teams each are set based on seeding Each team plays the other two teams within their pool Possible outcomes for any team are 2-0, 1-1, 0-2 A team that finishes 2-0 advances If no team in the pool finishes 2-0, it means that all teams finished 1-1 and in that case, the top seed advances.

The only team that can advance with a loss is a top 4 seed. 5-12 must go 2-0. The result of every pool is either a 3 way tie at 1-1. (Higher seed advances)
Or there is a 2–0 team 1-1 team 0-2 team

It's more frustrating than complicated.

The meaningless games within the 4 "pools" are the reason.
Our game against Notre Dame is case in point.
If we'd have lost to Notre Dame and then won last night, we'd have won the pool even though Clemson and Miami would both have have a 1-1 record because we beat Miami head-to-head.
Some are saying that the tie is broken by being the higher seeded team. If that's the case, it's even more frustrating.
Meanwhile, UNC and Ga Tech are both eliminated and still playing a game for absolutely no reason.

Well we wouldn’t have won our pool because we “beat Miami head to head” At that point we only advance because we’re a top 4 seed. That’s why earning the top 4 seed is a MAJOR advantage

Yes, that's what I'm coming around to understanding. Makes "pool play" even more frustrating.

It really is. The meaningless games don’t bring out fans and don’t make you want to watch. Imo
Perfect example. GT lost to Pitt Tuesday. So they’ve had to sit around for 2 days before playing unc today knowing 2 things: 1) They’re eliminated already from the tourney. 2) This is their last game because they’re not making the NCAA tourney.
What a waste of time

First all, I'm not a fan of pool play tournaments. That said, they have some advantages.
1) It rewards play in the regular season by giving a big advantage to the top 4 teams.
2) It gives every teams 3 games, even if one of them may be meaningless. While that GT/UNC game won't hold much interest for most fans, I guarantee you it means something to the players of those teams.
3) You have 12 teams in the tournament instead of 10 teams and you eliminate the 'play in' round. More teams equals more exposure and interest. Do you think those Pitt fans are excited? 2 years ago they wouldn't have even made the tournament. I bet they LOVE pool play.
Anyway... it has it's pros and cons like any other format. We're so biased against the format because it obviously hasn't yielded us any advantages at all. If we'd lost to ND, however, I bet we'd all be fans of the format.

To your first point I like that the top 4 have an advantage in playing after their lower seeds so they have the pitching advantage. I don’t necessarily like the higher seed advancing in 1-1 tiebreakers. I would like to see them do run differential although this does encourage teams to run up the score.
Second point each team is guaranteed 2 games but i know that’s what u meant.
Completely agree with your 3rd point

Run differential in baseball is a horrible idea (IMO)

For the reason you mentioned, but also because it actually does the "home" team in any game a disadvantage due to potentially batting one less inning.

Yea I guess that wouldn’t be the best way. There’s no other logical way to break the tie so higher seed it is!

Personally, I'd prefer to see the head-to-head game break the tie.

If there is a tie, it means all three in the pool went 1-1

So how would you break the tie with head to head? If you have pool play, it seems like they are breaking the ties the best way. Make the regular season mean something. Using run differential would be totally stupid!

But that won't work with 3 team pods
May 25, 2018, 12:58 PM
[ in reply to Re: Counterpoint ] |

There are only 2 possible scenarios with a 3 team pod:
1) TeamA: 2-0 TeamB: 1-1 TeamC: 0-2 2) TeamA: 1-1 TeamB: 1-1 TeamC: 1-1
It's trivial to see that teamA wins in scenario 1. But head to head won't determine anything for scenario 2 as TeamA beat TeamB who beat TeamC who beat TeamA.
