I think the new redshirt rule allowing players

to play four games without burning a red-shirt is a great rule. HAs there been any discussion of going back and letting current players regain their red-shirt year retroactively. For example, if we have a current player that is a junior or senior and they burned a year playing in one game in 2015 or 2016. Do they get that year back?

They do not. The rule applies ONLY to those who have not redshirted.

I think that's unfair, personally - there's more than a few guys who I think would love (and probably deserve) to get that redshirt year back, but the rules commit said negatory, and that's that.

I do think there's some veteran guys on Clemson's roster who might benefit from this one way or another, though. Kelly Bryant hasn't redshirted. Diondre Overton hasn't. Cornell Powell - who I think could be a high-round guy as a safety, between his ball skills and physicality - hasn't. Tre Lamar hasn't. For most of those guys it probably won't matter but I do think for some it well may.

I'm personally a big advocate of the notion, for instance, that if Kelly Bryant does lose his job to Lawrence, it happens early enough he gets that redshirt and hence gets that year back. Even if it's not Clemson, the guy is good enough to lead somebody and nobody can argue he doesn't deserve that last chance. Great example would be: if Jarrett Stidham were to leave after this year (and he well may), don't you think Auburn wouldn't love to have Bryant for 2019? I think he might actually fit Malzahn's version of the HUNH better than he does Clemson's. Or it might give somebody like Overton that one final year they need to make a strong case for the NFL, because I do think he's got the ability.

Thanks, very informative reply. I agree with you.***

I would imagine that rule goes into effect this season.

I'd be surprised if they opened the door to the slippery slope of retrofitting red-shirts.

Justyn Ross--he'll get to play in some of our easy contests to help him get some experience but with Overton and Higgins in front of him I'd say a RS is in his and our best interest

Lyn-J Dixon-- he isn't going to get much PT playing behind 3 stub RBs and Rencher is no slouch either. Give him some reps in game against Furman and GSU and maybe another game and he will be ready to roll in '19

Galloway -- he's already put on some weight (which is what he needed) but if Richard and Williams and Smith lock down the TE spot then Galloway will have another year before we really need to rely on him. I'm high on Galloway and think he turns into another Leggett

McFadden- We need to RS him because I think we have a solid 2 deep Oline group right now. but if he can get a few in game reps going into next season that's a win-win for us.

Mascoll-- its going to be tough for him to get reps behind the kind of depth we have. I saw him as a RS all the way anyways but at least he can get a rep or 2 this season.

Batson-- He would have RS anyways. But if we can get him some experience against Furman and GSU then that could play dividends down the road for QB depth.

The NCAA finally got something right! The new RS rule is not only great but long over due. How many times has the starting QB gone down late in the season leaving a team with a choice to either burn a RS for a few remaining games or play someone who gives you little chance to win. It also allows for a team who has a bad season to put in the freshman QB (or any position for that matter) for their last 4 games and still keep his/their RS.
