The only class that was ever odd for us was the Jamie Harper one. All the others have been methodically built. A second year coach with an average first year result and the charm of a rusty spoon is beating Urban Meyer, Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney for recruits they badly want. Can you imagine a similar situation where the guy at FSU didn't let any top prospect leave the state year 1 and 2 defying similar programs as Smart is doing.

Not more so than some other states but it does happen. Julio Jones's high school locked him inside when Pete Carrol showed up to visit from USC. Obviously not Georgia but things like that happen and there are certainly some coaches who get kickbacks for steering players to certain schools.

The only issue with that is that the majority of the recruiting for this class is done before they won the SEC/potentially winning the NC.

Generally when you when a championship you see greater effects the recruiting class after winning those titles, which sucks for us due to the small class size.

What Clemson has over UGA

Dec 17, 2017, 4:53 PM

Better relevant Tradition (We have won 2 National Champions since their last one)
Better head coach (We have the best coach in America, may win COY for 3rd straight year)
Better facilities (This is not close even)
Better stadium (Best 25 seconds in sports)
Better position coaches (Broyles Award to OC and DC last 2 years)
Better fans (ever met a UGA fan that was not a loudmouth redneck)

UGA performed well in a terrible division. They will be exposed as frauds in the playoff and get beat by around 20 points easily, maybe more.

Re: What Clemson has over UGA

Dec 17, 2017, 7:01 PM

I think Georgia may roll over Oklahoma. They have a nasty defense which Oklahoma hasn't seen before.

I don't understand why, after we were the perpetual underdog who got no respect, we're now doing the same thing to a program like Georgia. They look like the real deal in my eyes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What Clemson has over UGA

Dec 18, 2017, 10:50 AM

I think it's just due to the head to head recruiting battles that they are winning on right now, but to be honest it doesn't make sense for some kids as to why they're picking UGA over us right now based on the recent records of the program.

With regards to your point about the UGA-Oklahoma game, Oklahoma did play Ohio State who is a top 10 defense as well so it's not completely accurate that they haven't faced a defense like that before.

What we do know is that UGA has definitely not faced an offense like Oklahoma's. Auburn tries to run a similar style, but it's more heavily focused on the run and Stidham is a poor man's Baker (even though I hate that d bag).

UGA does look solid, but if you jump on them early and force Fromm to have to pass it to win I still don't think that's something he can do just yet. He passed it well in the SECCG, but Auburn dealt with injuries, and it's much easier to pass with a lead off of play action, etc.

They have always been up in the top five, even last Feb

Dec 17, 2017, 4:58 PM

after losing to Vandy and Georgia Tech. This year they just happen to be ranked in the season to match their recruiting rankings. They are probably the biggest underachiever in college football. Their state population, size of school, recruiting base and next to Florida they should have had a Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, type program for decades. They can't match us in national championships, 1980 vs 1981 and 2016, and they have not won that many SEC titles.

They will say that have two national titles because they went back and retroactively claimed 1942, a title which they are not mentioned as AP or any other service champ. That would be embarrassing to me if Clemson went back and claimed say the 1948, or 1900 national championship. It takes away from the legit championships you have. Yet, I will admit, I have read the background to their recent acquisition of the 1942 title and if ever there was a case to do that, they have it. They should have been the AP national champ that year, but champs were decided before the bowls. But the rules were the rules and everyone knew them. That situation sounds familiar to current Heisman voting. A lot of them would need to be reclaimed if that were the case. wonder if I can think of one?

Not sure you can call Kirby an underachiever. Richt definitely. But until two years ago clemson underachieved as much as Uga. It looks like both Uga and clemson have turned that around.

Why not count each national title? They happened. They're part of history. Who gives a rat's when they occurred.

Uga has the second-most SEC titles in conference with 13.

Georgia has always been a big job and they're at a huge advantage by having such plentiful in-state talent. They are the program in Georgia since GT has zero draw for recruits under Paul Johnson. They have great facilities, a passionate fanbase, a great stadium...why wouldn't it be an attractive school? They haven't had major success recently, but with a new coach that's already gotten them farther than they had gotten under Richt, why wouldn't there be reason for optimism?

The good news for us is we're currently a better program with tons to offer. There's a reason we've been able to poach so consistently from the state.

Guys have you not looked at the recruiting rankings for the past 400 years. UGAg always out recruits us in the rankings. They have built in advantages that no other school in the nation has. The state of Georgia produces the 4th most D1 football talent. They only have one serious school in their state that they have to recruit against and that is GATech and we know how much competition that is on the recruiting trail. The three other states ahead of them are California, Texas and Florida. What is most amazing is that for almost 40 years they have been irrelevant in college football. This in itself is a total joke as is the entire football program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don’t understand how Georgia is out recruiting us

Dec 18, 2017, 10:33 AM

I have been a fan of Georgia for many years. While in college in the mid 80s (Presbyterian College) I had a ton of friends that were die hard Clemson guys. So over time I started to follow them and have attended a bunch of games. I dont get the "UGA is out recruiting Clemson thing". I can point to a bunch of disappointments on our end. More than just Watson which ultimately / likely cost Richt his job. We also had some wins Gurley / Marshall. Over the years both teams have gotten their fair share and this year will be no different imho. Dabo and his staff have done a tremendous job and the fact Yall are a top tier team is undeniable. I also agree that Georgia historically has (as stated many times on here) done less w/ more. That said its our belief that things are changing. Clemson is as an example for turning things around. We hired a new staff, increased funding for S/C programs, hired a ton of analysts, and are dumping over 100M in facility upgrades. Heck a few years ago GT spent more on recruiting than we did. We simply are a year or two behind you in the process. Hopefully we will play you folks in the Natty and you will allow fans from other fan bases to stop by and talk football.

Richt was a zombie the majority of his time at UGA it seemed like. I think he believed all he had to do was recruit and get the kids there and the rest would work itself out. And Georgia recruits itself, so I'm really not sure what he did at all.

And same here, seems to me that is just his nature in big games. We had some really tough games this year, but Miami seemed like they weren't ready at all for a team with a pulse. All they were interested in doing was jumping around and hyping up the game and trying to make everybody believe the U is back

They certainly still have to actually go out and recruit, however, look at their class rank each of the last 7 years.

Of course it's still "hard" to recruit and it's a lot of work for every school, but to say that Bama doesn't get a leg up on the competition is simply ignorant in my opinion.

They won the SEC and made the playoff. Kirby Smart is a very good recruiter. You can't hang around the Alabama program for as long as he did and not learn how to recruit at a high level. I HATE the Dawgs as much as anybody on this board, but give the devil his due.

They won the SEC and got into the playoffs two weeks ago, so how did that help in recruiting guys that are signing two days from now?

I think Kirby Smart learned a lot at Bama. I also think he will be harder for them to replace than they want to admit.

One way or another ESPiN controls most of the ratings.

You'll find reality on the field.

I wouldn't really worry about it too much. Clemson has always gone for quality not quantity. Trevor Lawrence of Cartersviile Ga (case in point).

Most of the people who are signed by Ugay are criminals in waiting.

I have the privilege of living between Atlanta and Athens Ga. Most of the people that I run into are wearing UGa sweat shirts (from Walmart) Most don't look like even graduated high school.
One thing they all have in common is that they are all loud mouths and actually know very little about football or past football) schedules (history).

But what do you expect from people who probably spent most of their time smoking cigarettes behind the gum.

Maybe those kids are afraid they'd get hurt playing big-boy ball in the ACC. Been waiting years to say that.

I would rather have Fields btw.

Plus. UGA has historically owned Clemson.

Haven’t they always? What has it mattered?

I guess it keeps good players away from FSU, SCAR and like... they never do anything with them anyways. Nobody in the SEC is going to beat BAMA in the title game anyways. It’s just a black hole, fools gold.
