I cannot remember the year, but the ACC baseball tournament

was played in Clemson one year. Bob Bradley called me and he and I set up a little radio network and broadcast the games to areas for each school. This had never been done before. We did the games from a little shed at field level beside the first base dugout. We did every game. I did pbp and Charlie Poole, a Clemson grad and Rec Director at Belton, did color. As a point of interest. the only black player was Larry Doby Jr. His father was from Florence, SC and the first black man to play in the American League. I think I made twenty-five dollars on the whole deal.

Larry Doby was actually the 1st A-A baseball player and played in AL.
This was a few years before Jackie Robinson joined the NL.
He never actually returned to Camden, except to visit and lived in Midwest.
Please correct me, if I am wrong.

I think Doby joined the majors after Robinson. He was first

black in American League, after Robinson was first in the majors.

Larry Doby was a native of Camden, not Florence. His achievements are celebrated by the community today.

Go Tigers!

You are absolutely right. My bad. I have no idea why I typed Florence. I knew better.

We also did a couple of years of women’s basketball when Barbara Kennedy was playing. Best player I ever saw up to and including all of the UComn players of the last few years.

I agree, Charlie.

She later had a nice career in administration at Clemson.
