Guys Im asking becasue I dont know so please dont kill me.

Jan 5, 2017, 5:01 PM

I am a Clemson fan but under 30 years old. I know Steve Fullers number was retired. I don't know much about him. I'd like to, as well as, more about the history of Clemson. M question is is why was his number retired to begin with? I was doing some research and wanted to compare Fuller's stats to Deshaun's. I found this and according to this what warrants retiring his number? He only threw 22 total TD's in his career? He never had over 650 rushing yards per season...Again please lead me to some websites and educate me instead of bash me. thanks fellas Go Tigers!

They were different times, no QBs put up #'s comparable to Deshaun's back then. Running was more popular than it is now, and WRs and QB play has evolved over the years.

Steve Fuller was a QB in the late 70's. Football was a lot different back then. Not as many passes or QB rushes. Spread offense wasn't really a thing at all.

He was 6th in the Hesiman voting in 78'...if that gives you an idea of his history. Don't get there unless you're a dang good player.

Football was a different game then...

He was a 1st round draft pick and an All American.

He finished 6th in the Heisman voting.

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

Offenses are completely different today than they were then.

Jan 5, 2017, 5:12 PM

Those numbers got him ACC Player of the Year in 1977 and 1978.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Go back and watch his games.

Jan 5, 2017, 5:19 PM

Then you'll understand.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very simple - because he made a MAJOR difference......

Jan 5, 2017, 5:19 PM

in turning our program around from the losing days of Red Parker when he started Clemson to the winning ways we had when we beat OSU in the Gator Bowl in 1978. Don't compare him to DW or today's program - football was different then. But I remember how much difference he meant to our prgram - that's why he's in the ROH. He was THE MAN during his time in much the same was as DW is now.

He threw one pass...

to Jerry Butler and the rest is history.

Steve Fuller was a great athlete. He was a highly rated recruit from
Spartanburg High School. He was also offered a Basketball scholly to
UNC.Beat OSU in the Bowl that Woody Hayes hit Baughman.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IIRC he was a 2 time ACC player of the year

Jan 5, 2017, 6:18 PM

DW4 didn't do that.

Jan 5, 2017, 6:24 PM

I haven't read the replies.. but in case no one has mentioned it... football was different back then...

Fuller was also the first Clemson QB to beat Fla.St.I think it was Bobby Bowdens first
year as Fla St. head coach.Maybe 2nd.

Also, Fuller went on to the Chicago Bears...he was an integral part of that '85 Bears team that most people still consider the best and most-dominating team ever in football. Jim McMahon gets most of the credit for leading that squad...but the fact is, McMahon was hurt about half the time - I have seldom seen a crash-test dummy masquerading as a QB quite as much as McMahon - and I lost track of the number of times Fuller had to come in and spell him (under usually extreme duress!) that season. He actually logged stats in 11 games that season and threw for 777 yards...whatever, that '85 Bears team would not have made history without Fuller.

... and he was in the Super Bowl Shuffle with really bad dance moves.

Agree, different day, different game. Stats are incomparable, but it certainly appears as though he had "it" at all levels of game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which leads to a question I have been pondering

Jan 6, 2017, 9:28 AM

Fuller's number 4 should rightfully be "re-retired" following Monday's game, but how will we then recognize Deshaun in a similar way? Can a jersey number be retired twice, in two different names? Will DW have a #4 on his Ring of Honor plaque?
