Future Playoff System

Oct 8, 2014, 1:53 PM

ESPN and the SEC have created quite the powerful, efficient mechanism to keep the SEC above all other conferences...and more importantly get at least 2 teams in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how good they are at lobbying the selection committee. Only time will tell.

This raises the question...will having 2 SEC teams in the playoffs get us to an 8 team playoff quicker? I can't imagine that the other power conferences are going to be happy with no representation while the SEC gets 2 teams in. The ACC could very easily be 1 of the conferences that gets left out. With that being said here is my stab at a new playoff system with 12 teams.

12 teams total. A team seeded 5-12 could play a max of 4 games. Seeds 1-4 could play a max of 3 games. With an 8 team playoff a team could play a max of 3 games.

Rules/Regulations
1. Conference Champion + conference runner-up (if top 15 ranking-automatic; otherwise conference member as selected by committee). With power conferences this is 10 automatic into the playoffs.
2. (2) additional teams - Highest ranked teams out of ND or other conferences.
3. Teams seeded 1-4 get byes. Seeds 1-4 must be the highest ranked conference champions from the power conferences OR ND (ND only if ranked higher than 2 of the power conference champions & undefeated).
4. Play-in games (seeds 5-12) based on seeding from committee (5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10, & 8 vs 9). These games happen the weekend after the conference championships. The selection committee has the option of switching opponents to prevent same conference matchups.
5. All seeds will be determined by the selection committee.
6. First games played at home field of highest seed.
7. Next round is played at home field of seeds 1-4. OR these could be at bowl sites. (If at bowl sites selection committee determines location taking into account travel distance for higher seeded team, best matchup, and attendance)
8. Next rounds semi-finals & National Championship game are played at bowl sites. (sites predetermined base on bowl rotation)

Last year would have looked like this:

Conference Representation (based on end of year BCS ranking)
ACC: FSU (1) Clemson (12)…sorry Duke not in top 15; see item 1 above
SEC: Auburn (2) Missouri (8)….sorry Bama; see item 1 above
B1G: Michigan St. (4) Ohio St. (7)
PAC: Stanford (5) ASU (14)…ASU barely, sorry Oregon; see item 1 above
Big 12: Baylor (6) Oklahoma (11)
Others: Central Florida (15) Louisville (18)

Seeds
1. FSU
2. Auburn
3. Michigan St.
4. Stanford
5. Baylor
6. Ohio St.
7. Missouri
8. Oklahoma
9. Clemson
10. ASU
11. Central Florida
12. Lousville

Play-in games (Dec 14th; highest ranked team is home team)
(5) Baylor vs (12) Louisville
(6) Ohio St. vs (11) CF
(7) Missouri vs. (10) ASU
(8) Oklahoma vs (9) Clemson

Quarter final games (Dec 21st)
(4) Stanford vs (5) Baylor – played at Stanford OR Fiesta/Cotton
(3) Michigan St. vs (7) Missouri – played at Michigan St. or Fiesta/Cotton (MSU vs OSU would be a rematch of conference game, selection committee opts to change per item 4 above)
(2) Auburn vs (9) Clemson – played at Auburn OR Peach (Clemson vs FSU would be a rematch, selection committee opts to change per item 4 above)
(1) FSU vs (6) Ohio St. – Played at FSU or Orange

Semi final games (Dec 28th)
(4) Stanford vs (1) FSU - Sugar Bowl
(9) Clemson vs (3) Michigan St. - Rose Bowl

National Championship Game (Jan 7th)
(9) Clemson vs (1) FSU - Cowboy Stadium

We all know how that would have ended ;)...Go Tigers!

You put a lot of thought into that.

Not bad...could live with that system and would prefer the home games until semis. What about 11 teams and give all 5 power conference champions a bye?

Here's what I think would be perfect:

Oct 8, 2014, 2:40 PM

An 8 Team Playoff. We align it so that there are basically 8 D1 Conferences. Each conference has it's own championship and the winner of that conference gets to go (ONLY 1 team per conference. If you can't win your own division/conference, how can you make the argument you're possibly the best in the nation? - and I know that would hurt us against FSU, but it is what it is.)

Anyway, 8 Conference Champions - those 8 teams make up the 4 BCS Bowls. The winners of those play 2 games, the winners of those play for the NC.

It would take very little finagling and would only add one weekend (the 2 game semis) to what we have now.

Win your division, play for your conference championship. Win your conference, you're guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Seems really simple to me.

current power conferences?...but it does seem doable. Realistically we'll probably go to an 8 team, then a 16 team playoff. I think we'll go to an 8 team because the non SEC conferences will get sick of fighting for 2 spots. We'll go to 16 because the SEC will want more than 2 spots.

The solution. Just win the Playoffs will take care of itself. Go tigers!

8 team. .5 conference champion. .3 picks

Oct 8, 2014, 2:42 PM

The conference champion must have a championship Game.

No special conditions for notre ####.

8 teams with the old BCS rules would work fine

Oct 8, 2014, 4:00 PM

5 conf champs, 3 at larges, no limit per conf.

That is simple and equitable. THe only difficulty is scheduling the games.

Will they split conferences in two divisions like the nfl also and just make it the exact nfl playoff?

Everybody wants a playoff until they're given one, then they want more.
