Giese coached at SCar early to mid 50's. When he arrived on the plane at the Columbia one of the first people he spoke to was Frank Howard who greeted him at the airport. Gises said Howard was overly nice, welcomed him to our state and wished him nothing but the best while he coaced in Columbia. But then Frank told him whenever the media asked you about Clemson always answer like you hate Clemson's guts and Frank said he would do the same when asked about U of S.C. Frank said they needed to get the media involved in order to build up the rivalry to the national stage.

I have my own fond memories of Coach Howard. My dad and his son were in the same class at Clemson and they were friends. Coach Howard used to tell me some of his legendary stories whenever my Dad and I saw him at the home football games. I could listen to that man talk for hours. He was and always will be a true Clemson Legend.
