Venables: "Saturday can't get here fast enough"

South Carolina's offense had a field day against Clemson's defense last season, but defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Saturday that he thinks his group is better equipped for the challenge in 2013. Full Story »

I have a feeling Stephone Anthony will show why he was ranked a 5 star linebacker out of high school this game.

Certainly Venables and the defense have the most to prove

Nov 24, 2013, 1:26 PM

that their caliber has permanently risen. Good news is they have been proving that, sometimes slowly, all season. So this Saturday is a chance to show there is no fluke here, but they are improved all around.....I'm still a little nervous or anxious about our secondary, though....prove me wrong please!!

Uh oh, reminds me a little of the "It's on" comment

Nov 24, 2013, 1:31 PM

by Chad Morris at the start of the FSU week.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How'd you get that?

Nov 24, 2013, 1:45 PM

He responded in generalities to the question while complementing their players and coaches. In essence, it was nothing like the 'it's on,' comment.

You know actually, the more I think about it, you are right.

The comments aren't really the same.

I know what you mean. It's the kind of comment you can live to regret.

Nov 24, 2013, 4:12 PM

Otherwise what's the point of scheduling a cupcake the week before like they've been doing for years now

If we play for two halves this year instead of just the first half like last year we should win NO PROBLEMA :)

we didn't even play for a half, more like 20 minutes

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

No Coach, some games are more important than others.

Nov 24, 2013, 2:40 PM

I really hope you spent time last week preparing for South Carolina.

The Citadel.

I really, really hope that's just coach speak.

It would be if you lost to them. Just ask Fla. about Ga. Southern.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it was critical. Would we get a BCS bowl berth if we lost

Nov 24, 2013, 8:49 PM [ in reply to is he really trying to say Citadel is just as critical?*** ]

to the citadel??

ummmmmm nope

therefore: just as important!

Do you think that the coaches spent all week on el Cid?

Nov 25, 2013, 8:38 AM [ in reply to No Coach, some games are more important than others. ]

Puhleeze. They installed their game plan and probably worked on fundamentals. Obviously they aren't going to talk South Carolina to their team, but they were working on this week from the minute the GT game was over. You just aren't going to say that publicly. There are some games you know you can roll the ball out there and win.

Same as SC has been working on us since the minute the UF game was over.

Same as Alabama has been working on Auburn since Miss St.

Same as Florida has been working on FSU since South Carolina....well, that didn't work out so well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's no doubt coordinators are focused on the next

Nov 24, 2013, 3:09 PM

game but I'm pretty sure there have been plenty of staff watching film (if not the live games) for each opponent throughout the year. Venables doesn't just start from scratch on Sunday for the next Saturday game. I have to think he starts with a whole bunch of notes and prepped clips from others. And he probably has a chance to look at pieces throughout the season. He has probably been devising schemes and having his assistants doing the same off and on.

But today is the day, like every other day after the last game, where his focus is now 100% on the next game.

That's how I read coach speak in all these interviews. All they are saying is - "I've had SCar on my radar but haven't let it distract from the most important game - the next one. But Sunday is the day I bury myself and the players in nothing but prep and strategy."

If you were to put them under oath throughout the season there is no doubt they will tell you a ton about how key players - like Connor Shaw - have been playing. It isn't like they have completely shut it out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, how but we let Saturday takes its time hmm?

Nov 24, 2013, 4:11 PM

You have a lot of preparation to take care of first.

Re: Actually, how but we let Saturday takes its time hmm?

Nov 24, 2013, 6:54 PM

This point in the season, if we haven't gotten it now, we will never get it. The only preparation now is grap your mouth piece, helmet, shoulder pad, keets, buckle-up, follow assignments, bring a truck load of confident, 100% of belief, play Clemson's football like it no tommorrow(for some this hold true), proved to yourself as well as your team members that you are ALL-IN till the end, leaving everything you got on the field, and no stone unturned. Finishing what you started with a reminder to them: (NO FEAR)!!!
