If Clemson ran for an average of 237 yards against Auburn and Ball State, of course their run defenses will be ranked poorly. Stats of this kind after two games are pretty much pointless.

I didnt realize that the Clemson D was struggling like that on 2nd.

All in all, enjoyed the article!

Sounds like we're gambling. If we are giving up a bit over 4

yards on 1st down, then that's 2nd and medium, which sets up for a run or pass. We're guessing/gambling, and getting out of position.

The real problem is 1st down. Why? Because giving up so much on 1st puts us in the situation we're in on 2nd down. Football is about tendencies, it's a chess match. When you give teams 2nd and 5 or 6, you are not 2nd and long, but not 2nd and short either. It's very much a tweener and the offense could run or pass. You don't necessarily need a 1st down, just positive yardage to set up 3rd and short, which really opens up the playbook.

The reality is, we're giving up too much on 1st down, which puts us in gamble mode on 2nd down.

That leads to another question. Are we properly scouting the other teams so that we know their tendencies on 3rd and moderate?

Also, are we guessing wrong on the coaching side, or are our coaches calling the right defensive sets, but the players aren't executing?

Either way, improve on 1st down and you cut down the other team's options.
