He obviously knows what he is doing that is for sure. Sometimes we don't like the play calling but it is about execution and setting the D up sometimes.

Thinking that anyone is above any criticism is just as

Oct 16, 2018, 11:17 AM

loony as someone who thinks Elliot is a failure of a coordinator.

I think there is a healthy middle ground.

Criticizing a certain play-calling or scheme tendency isn't the same as saying Elliot sucks.

I think there are legitimate criticisms that would lead to an improvement of our offense. I think Elliot may have seen that himself already, and that was demonstrated in the Wake Forest game. Very obviously bad early game-planning (was not ETN's fault) was eventually fixed and resulted in much better production.

In every single game (including Furman, GSU, Wake and Syracuse) against inferior talent our scripted plays fail. That's not a coincidence. Adjustments are made and we win the game, sometimes by a large margin. Against a playoff team, we may not be able to save ourselves from our early offensive ineptitude.

My point is that he knows something is wrong with the way we start games. He doesn't need a bunch of whiny-a$$ fans to point it out for him. The man gets paid to fix these issues, so we need to shut up and trust him to fix them. Lord knows he has the experience and credentials. If we knew better how to do it, we'd be paid to do it too. But we don't. People just need to chill out and pull for your team. Let the coaches coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's sort of an odd take for a couple of reasons...

Oct 16, 2018, 11:45 AM

One is, coaches don't have life-time contracts. You make it sound as if the guy is incapable of ever being wrong about anything when compared to someone who is not a college football or NFL coach. I think the history of sports pretty much demonstrates that while fans are usually overconfident and tend to over-simplify things, there are times when coaches are stuck to something that is hurting the team.

And fans, last I checked, are supposed to be paying attention to how well their team is doing so that expectations push programs to be better.

It's no mistake that the programs with the most expectations are historically the most successful. Now I am a big advocate of fans being more humble than they usually are, but I think we are noticing something with our offense that is totally fair to discuss.

I don't know about you, but winning a national championship has not convinced me that fans will never have a legitimate gripe or disagreement about anything Clemson football related ever again.

Re: That's sort of an odd take for a couple of reasons...

You're making it sound like I have no expectations for Clemson football to succeed. Of course I do. I just know that the coaches who are paid gobs of cash to do the job are paid those gobs of cash for a reason. And I'm pretty sure that nobody on this board knows how to do the job better than Tony Elliott. It's one thing to voice your concern. It's another thing entirely to bash the coaches as if they have no idea what they're doing...when all they've done is go 46-4 over the last 3 1/2 seasons with 3 ACC championships (likely a 4th), 3 consecutive CFP appearances (likely a 4th), 2 CFP #1 seeds, and a national championship.

We may not like the way these 6 games have started, but nobody is perfect. We're undefeated and rolling right along. In my view, Tony Elliott and the rest of coaching staff deserve nothing but our undying praise for what they continue to accomplish. So I'll hold off on the criticism and trust the coaches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

After all that I think it sounds like we mostly agree.

Oct 16, 2018, 3:47 PM

I don't like the bashing, and I think aggressive, repetitive bashing is wrong.

On the other hand, coaches who get paid gobs of cash are capable of doing less than ideal things. And I think Tigernet is the proper forum for discussing it when people have specific criticisms that can be reasonably argued based on evidence.

I have been critical of our playcalling. But I also support this coaching staff.

the game.

During my days at CU in the 60's, the arguing often got hot and heavy in the halls, even after victories.

Now, social media allows all the world a stage upon which to vent, rightly or wrongly...something of which I'm certain our staff is attuned. I enjoy most of the commentary, for there are a lot of fellow Clemson fans with keen insight. Some may be clueless, but the sum of the parts reveals a fan base passionate for our programs. And that is healthy...very healthy indeed!

I'm sure Dabo and the coaches have their meetings and try to come up with better plans to fit their offense against certain defensive schemes. Just like the season all the coaches are always working to get better in every area.
