Really like you, Bret, but I hope this^^^ was tongue-in-cheek.
FSU's joining of the ACC (becoming the 9th member) broke the decades-long monopoly that Tobacco Rd (i.e., the 4 schools from NC) had exercised over the ACC. It was particularly bad after the 8-school league 'lost' South Carolina in 1971. UVA and MD were treated like red-headed stepchildren (is that still ok to say?), and Clemson like the distant simple cousin that slept in the shed.
That's also why some Tiger fans will never totally forgive USC. Their current culture likes to imagine a scholastic superiority that ignores both reality and history. They didn't want to raise academic standards to meet new ACC guidelines. But the real problem was that they abandoned us in 1971 so we became the ACC's sole whipping boy.
And then of course, they're SC, so there's no reason to like them anyway.
How is Swofford responsible for any of this, since he just became Commish in 1997? He was AD at UNC from 1980-1997. He pushed for Clemson to be (still) the only school in history to be punished by our conference cousins on top of NCAA penalties. Our football program's Dark Ages after Danny were largely due to Swofford.
When FSU joined the conference, you joined our world. It was a very dysfunctional family. Hopefully the next generation won't have to remember as many grievances as ours
The first step in forgetting is getting Swofford to 'retire' and replacing him with someone from outside NC.
