Fire Batson?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He could only do 3 when he left Clemson

Feb 22, 2014, 8:56 PM

The other 13 came in the last couple of months. Just ask any Batson hater.

I'm not a Batson hater per say

Feb 22, 2014, 9:36 PM

But I do believe we need a change in philosophy. Bench press is one of the things Batson focuses on, so it's no surprise our guys do wellin that area. However, he has refused to adapt his philosophy over the years. He uses the same one he always has when most programs are going in a diff direction. It's no coincidence that when SC started beating us and having more national success, Spurrier had just revamped their whole S&C program there. Anyone who doesn't think we've got issues in that area, just go back and watch the SC State game. Our OL was pushed around by a AA team, again. Look up Sammy's quote about using muscles since he left Clemson, that he never knew he had. That one statement speaks volumes. Look at the views scouts have on our players once they're about to enter the draft. Many, many times, there lack of strength is mentioned. I appreciate all Batson has done, but he needs to either adapt the way other programs have or move on

Admittedly, I was curious why Sammy would say he was

Feb 22, 2014, 10:03 PM [ in reply to I'm not a Batson hater per say ]

working out muscles he had never used before. The thing is, he could have spent time on those muscles while at Clemson. I doubt anyone told him NOT to. Same thing with Boyd going to work out with a QB guru. You have to sometimes take it upon yourself to do/learn more...not just wait for coaches and trainers to push you.

But if Sammy is greatly benefiting by some new workout regime, perhaps he can share his secrets with our current staff ;)

These trainers spend time every day (24hrs a day) studying, reading, and seaching the globe for better ways to maintain their business or they won't have one as a personal trainer receiving mega bucks from their clients. College athletes have a tremendous schedule to maintain academically and athletically. Dealing with 80 to 100 plus football players and their college schedule won't allow enough time to cover every muscle in the human body. And if you can find a college football program who can cover these muscle of 100+ football players in a couple of hours before classes or practices, please pass it on to us by posting.

Not sure if you meant to respond to me but I agree.

Feb 23, 2014, 12:22 AM

Not only what you said, but they also have different philosophies. Isn't Batson's background more to do with Olympic lifting and such? If these players want the full benefits of training, they'll have to seek out a lot of info themselves. Some philosophies are simply different.

Batson participated in drug free powerlifting in the mid-late 80s.

why don't you post about Brandon Thompson and his bench numbers? Or does that not count because he is a different type of player?

The bench press doesn't really mean anything for WRs unless it's abnormally good. I'd say that a speed receiver putting up 16 reps is high enough to turn into a plus.

TRUE BENCH PRESS

Feb 23, 2014, 5:50 PM

Not saying Sammy was doin' it........

But a lot of the participants were; But a true bench press
isn't dropping the bar bell across your chest/stomach &
bouncing back up to the top position.

And these guys are pros? Really....really.

:(

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree prime

Feb 23, 2014, 6:00 PM

But if your money was on the line and nobody was making sure you kept form, you would do the same and so would I.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BUT!!

Feb 23, 2014, 6:24 PM

the guys overseeing it should make it clear how
it should be done, and if you bounce it..
IT WON'T COUNT.

But true, I understand what you're saying. Just Baffles
me that you're suppose to have ppl knowing what they're
doing.

right.

I wanted to post something about this earlier

Feb 23, 2014, 6:51 PM

about how much b!tching there was about our lifting techniques, when apparently, the combine is fine with it. Is it perfect form? Probably not, but it seems good enough for people who train and look after the pros

Clemson

Re: This is more about reps/ endurance

Feb 23, 2014, 8:34 PM

A correct competition bench is (or was when I competed)
1. The weight has to stop on your chest(~1 second)
2. Move up (w/o sinking down first) with a pretty even lockout at the top.
3. Butt had to stay on bench and feet flat on the floor.

The reps w/ 225 was usually done at the end of a workout for endurance.
