Eight Team Playoff and Notre Dame

Would an 8 team playoff which include 2-3 at large bids make it easier for independents such as Notre Dame and BYU receive a bid?

It would seem that doubling the number of teams in the playoff would certainly increase the odds of all team's chance to make the playoffs.

I just don't see them adding more games unless

they make the conference championship games playoff games some way. That would make 16 games possible for some teams in a season.
