ELI5: What is basic understanding for reading sideline card?

Oct 19, 2017, 12:11 PM

Explain like I'm 5 ... how are players supposed to read the sideline cards?

Does each symbol refer to a different play? Is it a combination of hand signals and signs that each player knows to focus? Does each player have their own card, or perhaps the first letter of the symbol means something? How much do cards change each week? Is Tupac still alive

Every team is a little different...

Some are actual plays.

Some are just formations.

While some don't mean anything.

It's not uncommon to see coaches and players hold up three separate cards while three other people are signaling in plays with their hands.

Meanwhile there's probably some inconspicuous guy off to the side sending in the actual plays

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Exactly

Players have 5 seconds to read these things. Shirley there's some simple key for them to follow (and only they know the key).
