Duke Energy and Clemson: better safe than miserably sorry

Apr 19, 2019, 9:50 PM

Apparently a hot topic around Clemson

NIMBY ?

Apr 19, 2019, 10:53 PM

Modern life takes electrical power, which requires transmission and distribution lines and substations.
The current plan is to place the needed substation directly behind the essentially derelict looking National Guard Armory on a small piece of already cleared land sandwiched between two roadways.

Placing the substation there and retaining natural, currently forested undeveloped land owned by Clemson seems a really sensible idea. Something good could eventually go onto the land the university owns or it could remain a natural, normal small bit of forested land. The tiny triangle between 76 and Pendleton Road isn't good for much and it makes sense to put something that serves the whole community on that land, more or less like the Armory.

As the article points out, there is no scientific understanding that transmission lines, distribution lines and electrical substations pose any danger to the community. The Montessori School currently exists in part in a repurposed single family house sandwiched between commercial properties (which makes it a less than desirable residential location) and separated from the proposed substation by a business and a parking lot for that business.

Sounds like NIMBY to me.

Article forgot to mention the new power plant is replacing a coal fired plant current located in the center of campus.

So, reality is the story was merely a guise

To foster fear of electro-magnetic 'possibilities'? Everything's an editorial these days. Too bad box scores only exist in sports...lol!
