All depends on when you leave. 77 to 40 would be better if you can by pass 77 neat 485 between 4 and 6. It is a little bit shorter ( very little ) but a nicer drive .

take US 321 to gastonia to hickory, then 40 - easier, less traffic, good rds

Check the traffic on google maps before you leave to see what if any construction traffic there is on I85 or I77. If none then it's 50/50, if bad on one take the other.

Take 321, only 5 miles longer than taking the loop but avoids the construction at Lake Norman.

Driving to Raleigh to see our son...we found 26 to 40 is fast real fast... with minor slow down s in Statesville and Hickory...and most times that is his route home to here on lake keowee

No question from the upstate to Winston Salem. I-85 to US 321 North and then I-40 east. the only traffic is from exiting I-85 and getting on US 421 in Gastonia.
