Does Clemson actually have 4 football National Championships

Jun 23, 2012, 3:01 PM

According to Alabama's new precedent for claiming National Titles pre 1950. Clemson can claim 4 National Championships in Football
http://blog.al.com/solomon/2010/01/got_12.html
This article doesn't tell all. Some of the Organizations named Bama national Champs retroactively.
the NCAA only recognizes that Bama has 9. Instead of 13 or 14 depending on which Bama fan you talk to.

Other schools around the country are now claiming retroactive titles based on the precedent set by Alabama. What do you think?

1900 - 6-0 Coach John Heisman
1948 - 11-0 Coach Frank Howard
1950 - 9-0-1 Coach Frank Howard
1981 - 12-0 Coach Danny Ford

I actually looked back at the other teams in involved and and we would a legitimate claim in these years.

By the way if the same standard applies to The SCar then they still have ZERO. They might fight about 1907 but they would really have no argument.

Relatively speaking i mean and the retroactive title thing has kept creeping with other schools since the 86 season

The problem is that no computer model or poll has named us a champ for any of those first three years. Sagarin has only modeled out champions back to 1919 so I have no idea how our 1900 season fares. Kentucky are even claiming a title these days because of a retroactive award from Sagarin for the 1950 season. They went 11-1 that year but the AP/UPI champ was 10-1 Oklahoma. I haven't heard of any schools claiming a share of the championship solely based on record, but I think everyone is taking claim of any championship they have received a piece of in over 20 mathematical/computer polls and roughly 20 human polls over the years. But, when you start counting all that crap there only roughly a dozen undisputed champs since 1900.

yeah that the point of the specific bama reference really

Jun 23, 2012, 3:51 PM

they are claiming title awarded to them retro actively by organizations that didn't exist when the season was played.

for the other part of your question.

in 1900 Yale claimed the title with a 12-0 record

in 1948 (our best case for another)Mich, ND and Cal also finished with undefeated records and untied records. however the poll was taken before the season was over. Mich was 9-0 ND was 9-0-1 and Cal was 10-1 after a loss in the Rose bowl. We won more games than anyone that year.

In 1950 we tied the game against Scar and were 9-0-1 the final had a lot of teams ahead of us. but after everything was said and done Cal and Princeton finished with the same 9-0-1 record. all the others had a loss. At the time of the final poll we were 8-0-1.

Certainly food for thought. Bamas Sid said 5 more in 86 and now its part of their culture. I'm not opposed to doing the same thing.

All you have to do is make up a formula retroactively that would name Clemson the champ in those years. Call it the MSTiger method, run it for every other year too, post the results on a blog and you're 100% as legit as any of the mathematical models. I bet half of the ones listed by the NCAA now were done with the same intentions for other schools.

In football because Alabama has never played D3, D2 or 1-AA... Those are the only football championships the NCAA has ever recognized.
