I think I read that the number had nothing to do with anything he wore in his playing days.

Danny needed a jacket or something and the equipment guy gave him that one. I think it is as simple as that. I could be wrong.

Gator Bowl after the '78 Season versus Ohio State (the Woody Hayes incident)and Coach Ford's first game as head coach. The weather turned cold the evening of the game and Coach Ford had left his jacket. He grabbed Jeff Suttles' jacket (#23 on the sleeve) because of their similar size. Coach Ford was and is superstitious, after an amazing victory in his first game as head coach, he chose to wear a jacket with the number 23 on the sleeve! Great story!

It was Jeff Suttle's jacket...his number was 23...played strong safety
