Crowd estimates

Jan 12, 2019, 6:27 PM

I was at the celebration in the valley today and would guess the crowd was 40K. Have any official estimates been released?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

looked like a good 90,000 to me

40 looks about right from where I sat

I was there. The bottom was packed. I would say atleast 35,000 but probably between 40,000-50,000! GO TIGERS!

Re: Crowd estimates

Police chief said 40,000. Fire chief said 42,000. So that means 82,000 is the official number.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wasn’t there but FYI - the lower deck holds

Jan 12, 2019, 6:51 PM

50K -55K and the upper decks only hold about 30K combined if that. I get a chuckle when people see half of a corner section missing in one upper section and think that knocks 4k off the total. Looks can be deceiving.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Funny, because back in the 70's with just the lower bowl

Jan 12, 2019, 6:55 PM

and end zone bleachers capacity was just 43,000. I think you're off a little off

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope- do some research***

Jan 12, 2019, 7:30 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, I was there

Jan 12, 2019, 7:33 PM

Capacity went over 50K when we added the first upper deck.

With a packed hill in the 70's we'd have 50K, and the hill was much bigger then

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

then your memory is off - I was there also

Jan 12, 2019, 7:41 PM

But here’s the info from the official athletic site if you want to continue......

“With the large endzone, “Green Grass” section, this expansion increased capacity to 53,000. Later, upper decks were added to each side of as crowds swelled – the first in 1978 and the second in ’83. This increased capacity to over 80,000, which makes it one of the largest on-campus stadiums.”

The hill was eaten away some but the WEZ added seats so the net is about the same. Also as it states - 53000 to over 80000 when upper decks were added shows the size of the decks to be somewhere around 30k with at most a 2k difff above or below that #

There was actually more exact #s given when the seat license stuff came out in the last 10 years.

word of advice - don’t rely on Wikipedia

Jan 12, 2019, 8:14 PM

https://clemsontigers.com/death-valley/

Note you can even calculate the # of seats in the 2nd upper by the cost provided along w per seat cost- roughly 15,588 in that one.

The lower contains 50+ and when we go over capacity as used to be allowed - like the 86k mentioned, all of that extra is lower as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right, which meant they could jam 10K

Jan 12, 2019, 10:04 PM [ in reply to then your memory is off - I was there also ]

on the old hill. Actual stadium seating capacity was 43K in the lower bowl and old end zone bleachers

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Right, which meant they could jam 10K

Jan 12, 2019, 10:08 PM

People are much fatter now, none of u have taken this into consideration. You must factor in 1 fat person taking up 2 seats.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The whole point is there is only roughly 30K

Jan 12, 2019, 10:40 PM [ in reply to Right, which meant they could jam 10K ]

seats in the upper +/- 2k - that leaves 50K in the lower bowl. Any excess over “capacity” is always in the lower bowl. They have always played with the official capacity # based on hill included/not included- hill included at 10k, 6K, 4K, hill limited by fire marshall. There have been other modification based on club and handicap seating and WEZ. None of that significantly changed/changes the # in the lower. Since the upper decks have been added(starting in 78 and 2nd in 83)the upper decks have been fixed amt at ~30K and the lower bowl has always been ~ 50k+. When the record of ~86 was set there would have been a~56 in the lower to make that happen. When someone says the lower bowl is full - one can assume there is 50k in the stadium. If it’s 90% full then it’s 45k. This whole thread started with folks estimating 30-35k and others saying the lower bowl was full or nearly full. If the latter is accurate then it was a lot more than 30-35 there.

The term lower bowl includes the hill no matter what official capacity says. If you want to say 43 in the stands or 43 in perm seating that’s fine but the lower bowl means the whole thing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But this whole discussion is about guaging

Jan 12, 2019, 11:12 PM

the crowd today. The WEZ doesn't seat near what it did in the 70's, the hill wasn't seated and the upper decks were sparse. So if the lower bowl was full you had about 40k.

You also had then and now once the upper decks were completed about 20 seats per luxury box included in seating capacity

I heard About 500,000 Gamecock fans were watching on TV and 499,999 will deny it.

Re: Crowd estimates

Jan 12, 2019, 10:08 PM

The upper decks were empty, I assume it was due to the weather. The lowers were about 90% full. Not sure what that means on numbers.

Re: Crowd estimates

Jan 12, 2019, 10:12 PM

I watched on TV , I was guessing 35-40k ... maybe a few more .

DB23

It would've been 40k but I can't give credit for the 2 coots***
