Education costs have risen 65% over last 10 yrs..
Health Care at 21%..
Housing at 16%.
Exactly the reason I'm not a student anymore, using more bandaids & living in a trailer.

education COSTS have not increased that much, just that states and federal government do not subsidize higher public education as much as in the past because the country is going broke. State Schools cost almost as much as private universities now as a result. It was probably darn near free when you attended.

my first year,'64,was $1400 dollars for room,board,and tuition,and that was out of state.only books,spending and travel money were extra.although there might have been a few small charges like activities fees as well.any qualified in-state students who didn't go to CU were just plain nuts.

You're pretty close. Federal and state funding keep dropping, but it's less were going broke and more people don't want to pay taxes. To hell with poor people and the middle class. They should have money. Healthcare, education, etc. It's all 'discretionary'.

I think it's the difference in what the state contributes. My daughter went to UNC (not happy about that), but in state UNC vs in state Clemson was 40% less, so I assume it's the state's contribution or maybe it's just that NC save money because of the fake classes that don't have to be attended.

Clemson has gotten so much from my wallet since the Fall of 2016 . Why not another grand or two this final year ? I mean ... why not ?
I'd probably complain but our footballs keep knocking over National Championship trophies .

Most kids have scholarships and grants. If you can’t afford Clemson for 4 years, Greenville tech and TCT are both pretty much free with grants. Going to Clemson is a choice, of course you will rack up 100,000 in debt if you don’t seek out scholarships. There’s many places you can cut corners to make college affordable. Also Clemson isn’t even raising prices much, the state is reducing funding to public university. You also don’t factor in 4000 then and 4000 now are two different things.

When I went to Clemson, a new Corvette was about $6,000, too. Apartment rent was $95 a month in-cluding utilities. My Clemson Ring was about $75, too, and a pretty good salary upon leaving was $12,000/year. Not trying to defend the cost of "education", but we do live in a different world now. Also, if we won 7 games, it was a good year, and Hootie Ingram's salary was $35,000, and he wasn't even close to being worth it.

Much of the increase cost is due to decreases in state funding. The baby boomers and generation x are blind to how easy they had it. For a generation that drains everything they touch they sure are critical of later generations. They went to college for next to nothing and will destroy social security on the way out.
Later generations, myself included (30), will have student loans that reach the level of our parents first mortgages.

it is because boomers pulled the ladder up behind themselves. They got the nice socialist funded educations in the 60's and 70's, then decided to stop paying back into the system in the 80's.

to go $100 grand in debt for an entry level tech job
and the possibility for slow advancement in an increasingly
competitive job market? If you're ego driven, you'll take the
debt. An alternative for motivated and patient peckerheads
is to start working and take a class or 2 at a time while
you're young and a lot of companies will pay for it.
And I see a lot of entitled lazy arrogant millennials wanting
everything handed to them and feel the need to waste money on
a lot of high tech toys and gas hog vehicles while touting
veganism to protect animals while destroying the environment
they and we live in. So none of us are innocent. But I digress
into a mad crazy rant.

If a person goes to Clemson on just the pell grant and loans for four years, they’re a fool. You can seek out scholarships and grants to help with tuition. College is a choice, you have to decide whether loaning money is going to be worth it in the long run for your career path. Clemson out of state is outrageous, I can get behind that, but our prices are similar to everywhere else at the moment. State funding has lessened, thus prices are going up. Going to community college for 2 years is not a bad idea for a family strapped for cash as well.

Niece accepted into Clemson honors college but only offered a few additional scholarships.
NC State offered a far more impressive program for her major, scholarships and an awesome guaranteed internship at SAS each year. Setting her up nicely for success down the road.
Would have still been cheaper to attend Clemson in state, but they didn’t go out of their way to assist. Unfortunately she’ll be a wuffie in the fall.

I think you are dreaming if you think it’s that easy to get scholarships and grants. If you come from a disadvantaged family or have exceptionally bright kids, I am sure you can. For the average kid from the average family, it isn’t.

first two years they went to community college, worked and stayed at home. Second two years they went to state college. They got some small scholarship money worked summer internships and went to State University. They worked their butts off in school and it paid off immediately. They both had their loans paid off in a year. $1000 a month minimum until the loans were paid off. My oldest paid hers off with her signing bonus.
If you have high student loan debt, it is your own fault and nobody else's.

they loved it. The engineering program is first class. They both had multiple great offers to choose from out of school. My youngest is a senior and UNC Charlotte, he went to community college too. He loves it there too. He is working a great internship this summer and for sure will end up with multiple offers as well. My kids still love Clemson, but they went their own way because that is what made the best sense for our family. I thought State was a great University, the engineering labs and buildings were first rate. There is nothing that I disliked about State other than their fans on game day.

I just returned to Clemson after suffering an entire week at Edisto and the first thing I see is LBB complaining about the cost of an education at the "University of Clemson". My gosh Bill, just enjoy the free education you get from reading the posts on TigerNet. Where else can you get expert advice for free? While at Edisto I though of two enlightening topics to post on this board sometime in the future. I'll probably need two or three weeks to recover from doing absolutely doing nothing at Edisto before posting these educational tidbits.

That work maybe 6-10 hours a week with the Summers off (to do research, write a White Paper, Book, etc.) and make over $200k per year. Rarely, if ever do you hear of layoffs or cuts in Compensation.

in Seneca and worked my way through my b.s. in the 90s... Went back for grad school and post 9/11 GI bill paid 100% of the tuition and 1200 a month housing allowance...Can't beat that...unless you had rich parents, i guess.

Parents allowing kids to go to these expensive colleges for the "experience". If the parents are paying for it then go for it but a kid coming out of college with $50-$60k in loans is insane. I'm sure most want to get married and have a family but the person they marry more than likely has this same amount of debt. So you starting a marriage with over $100k in debt is a very expensive "experience".
Go to a local tech school for FREE the first 2 years then transfer to a state college, live at home and have little to zero debt. Now that these kids have made the choice to get in debt up to their eyeballs they want to blame everyone else and want the debt forgiven.
I bought my home but the payments are too expensive and I cant save any money. Why shouldn't the government pay my mortgage off?

Exactly right! The biggest ponzi scheme going on now is college tuition. Kids get in over their heads and expect the taxpayer to bail them out. Add to that 16 year olds should be eligible to vote!
Of course they are learning how to protest and hide in their safe spaces. Graduating with a degree in eastern liberal dance and wonder why they cant get a job.

The more lottery, loans etc that are available, the higher schools can raise prices. Simple economics. As long as there is a demand and money available, schools can adjust. Only when demand slows down to where schools do not make budget, then you might see some downward adjustment.
But, since when have you seen a quasi-government agency return money? It usually takes a significant event to change. Santee Cooper is a prime example of a bloated quasi-government agency. Look for big changes there soon. SCANA is no longer... now Dominion Energy.
As for me and mine, one child just graduated, and one will be there in a few years. Luckily, the student loans for the first are manageable. I have young family member that went out of state to a small private school to play a sport, their loan is unreal.
