Cornell Powell

Aug 14, 2018, 10:06 PM

Hard to believe he has only caught 19 total passes over the last two years, mostly in mop up duty.

Do you think he will actually get more touches than last year? If not, do you think a transfer could be in the offing?

Would probably have been a three-year starter under previous regimes...not this one.

I think he's super talented and expected him to blow up last year but we didn't throw as much. If we air it out he'll get more touches but he has some stiff competition... haven't heard his name a ton.

Re: Cornell Powell

Aug 14, 2018, 10:30 PM

I was thinking the same thing. He hasnt had many opportunities and with all the freak WRs we have on campus right now and what’s coming in next year, I could definitely see him transferring unless he has a good year. He is slowly getting lost on the depth chart so I’m leaning more towards him transferring. Wouldn’t be surprised if Overton transferred as well with Tee Higgins and Ross playing the way they are. I really liked Cornell when we recruited him so i hope he sticks around and can be more of a Jayron Brown the rest of his career. Brown didnt get much attention when Sammy, Bryant and Hopkins were on the field but he still made it into the league and is doing well. If Cornell is ok with that role than i can see him staying at Clemson

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now before everyone start the KB vs. TL debate, even Hunter could have stretched the field more last year.

Where do you guys come from? Hunter had his best year as a tiger last year with Kelly B at QB

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: BINGO!

Aug 15, 2018, 4:30 PM

He had more receptions, and thus also yards, though part of that was a huge yardage, not so long throw run vs SCar over half the field... But last year, he also averaged less per reception truthfully than he did any year under Watson.

Those are stats idiot. Average yards per play... Means Kelly throws were shorter.

Refute me with facts. If you have nothing substantive (that means it’s related to the actual topic being discussed), then I’d suggest you save the bandwidth for someone who does have something to say.

Come to think of it, have you ever commented on anything Clemson sports-related (and not just a pi$$y criticism of another poster)? I think not.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fact is we didn't field a WR that had the ability

Aug 15, 2018, 3:03 PM

to go get the ball like a Nuk,Watkins,Bryant,Leggett,Williams or Scott. Hopefully like Kelly they're all better going into another year in the program and incoming Freshmen like Ross and Kendrick are as advertised.
It's hard to replace your top 2 WR's,QB,RB and TE while still making a playoff run. It takes an IDIOT not to see that.

Back to the OP

By all reports, our 3rd year WR.s(Powell,Overton and Chase) have all taken a step to being closer to what we thought they were.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That’s absurd

Aug 15, 2018, 5:06 PM

If you like Kelly B and think he’s the best QB for the job fine... but to say that his inaccuracy wasn’t a primary factor in the lack of deep pass completions last year, well...

Aren’t you the guy who used the term “incumbent QB”? smh

^truth...only played in 5 games one year, 6 the other, barely in any of the big games (only main on was 1 reception in the Auburn game). Think he just hasn't taken it to the next level in practices enough to earn the playing time. Wasn't he recruited a lot based on his return skills?

TL throws a great deep ball which is suited to Powell's skill set.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cornell Powell

Aug 14, 2018, 11:31 PM [ in reply to Re: Cornell Powell ]

Most of the deep routes are run by the 9 position in our offense, Powell isn’t a 9 position WR. Our offense last year didn’t have a true 9 receiver that was ready to play, once T. Higgins came on the last 3 games we threw deep more often. The deep ball will be a big part of the offense this year no matter who starts at QB, because we have WR’s who can go up and get the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cornell Powell

Aug 15, 2018, 7:31 AM

It wasn't the WR's as much as some of you think.. Hate to break it to you. Cain had issues, but that's about it. Feel free to read below (3rd paragraph if you want to stay in denial on Bryant's stats):

https://www.cfbfilmroom.com/2018/01/16/kelly-bryant-2017-passing-chart/

Kelly Bryant’s downfield passing numbers severely limited Clemson’s big-play ability and appeared to play a role in the play calling. Bryant completed just 25.6 percent of his passes thrown 20 or more yards downfield, a huge dropoff from Watson’s 40 percent a season ago. Additionally, Bryant’s 43 pass attempts at 20+ yards downfield were less than half of Watson’s 90 attempts. In fact, Watson threw more touchdown passes 20+ yards downfield (13) than Bryant had total completions at that depth (11).

Bryant’s struggles as a passer weren’t limited just to deep throws, however. On attempts 10 or more yards downfield, Bryant completed just 46.3 percent of his throws, with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Overall, Bryant’s average completion traveled just 5.6 yards in the air.

Some fans might be inclined to point out that Bryant was hurt by drops this season, which is true to an extent. Clemson’s leading receiver Deon Cain had a disappointing 12.5 percent drop rate. However, Bryant’s receivers only had an overall drop rate of 8.0 percent, which was actually an improvement from the 10.5 percent drop rate Watson suffered from a season ago.

If I had a nickel for every time Cain had to slow down to wait on the long ball, or have to make a diving catch, or make some incredible leaping grab due to badly thrown balls, ...

Bottom line - KB had serious issues with the long ball, and the college football world realizes that. Cain lost a bunch of money in the draft due to lack of those long ball attempts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cornell Powell

Aug 15, 2018, 9:48 AM

People just need to learn how to put the blame where it belongs. The main person that dropped passes was Cain...not Ray Ray, not Renfrow, not Thompson, Powell, Overton, Higgins, or Rodgers. But the lack of a deep ball WAS Bryant.

Let's look at an extreme way of looking at it. Let's "pretend" all of Cain's dropped passes were on a deep ball (yes, I know several were shorter throws but...for proof sake, let's look at the extreme way). So Cain dropped 12.5% of his passes. So, KB had 43 passes past 20 yards. If all dropped of those were Cain, that means Cain dropped 5 of 43 passes at the worst. Since KB was 11-43, we'll remove those 5, so now KB was 11-38 without Cain's drops. That's still only 28.9% completions. Now it says receivers averaged 8%...so let's use that on the 38...that'd be 3 more dropped passes. So now he's 11-35 passes not dropped. Still only 31% completions...which means 69% of his deep throws were either under thrown, over thrown, or had good defending against it.

And that's likely the best you can make it look.

Re: Cornell Powell

Aug 15, 2018, 9:06 PM [ in reply to Re: Cornell Powell ]

Drop rate is one side of that coin- receivers saving his bacon on bad passes is the other and is never factored in.

I have a feeling someday, as football fans tend to be stat freaks, someone will start charting passes by how close they were thrown to where they ought to have been thrown, time in tenths of a second they were early or late and how often as a percentage did he target the right guy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cornell Powell

Aug 14, 2018, 11:14 PM

When he’s had the opportunity he’s made plays, we’ve just had more talented players in front of him the last two years. This year we are even more talented than two years ago and much, much more talented than last year, so I don’t see him playing much more than last year. Clemson recruits three very different skill sets to play the three WR position, and the position he plays is the deepest.

Re: Cornell Powell

Mickey Plyler called out this thread (or one just like it) on his show this morning and I think his take was very unfounded. His take is that some people find the negative in everything, and I don't think that asking why Cornell hasn't played much is negative at all.

How dare anyone wonder how the #4 ranked WR in the 2016 class and borderline 5 star has only 19 catches in 2 years and hasn't cracked the 2 deep!!! Sites like Tigernet make money by selling these rankings and writing articles about how great these high school stars are. Sometimes we follow these guys 1 or 2 years before they are even on campus. It's nice to know how a player is developing (and not negative) when they were followed pretty closely for months, if not years, and then never heard from again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, I heard that. Didn't understand why he thought I was

Aug 15, 2018, 9:20 AM

being negative in the thread.

I was watching the Georgia Tech game on DVR and saw Powell make a catch in the 4th quarter, which got me thinking about him. So I looked up his stats and was surprised to see he had caught only 19 passes over two years. I also noticed that he was from Greenville NC and that made me wonder if he might be a future candidate for transfer to ECU.

If anything, I believe I was being optimistic by realizing that a 4 star wide receiver who was Shrine Bowl MVP is buried on the depth chart.
