Coach Brownell versus Coach K.

Mar 26, 2013, 9:15 AM

tigernetters point to Coach K as a reference point for Coach Brownell's tenure and potential to rise from the ashes of the last 2 years.

Coach K, in his fourth year, went 24-10 overall, 7-7 in the ACC and got his team into the NCAA tournament as one of 32 teams.

I like that trajectory. :)

I think BB could take him, I mean he is younger, bigger and taller.

K would have a hard time getting shots off, but may get BB in foul trouble if the refs are calling the flops!!

;)

Make it idjit proof and someone will make a better idjit.

Here are the year by year comparisons....

Mar 26, 2013, 9:35 AM

for anyone who may be interested.

Coach K's first three season at Duke

1980 - 81: 17 - 13 overall, 6 - 8 in the ACC (T-5th) (NIT quarter finals)
1981 - 82: 10 - 17 overall, 4 - 10 in the ACC (T-6th)
1982 - 83: 11 - 17 overall, 3 - 11 in the ACC (7th)

Coach Brownell's first three seasons at Clemson

2010 - 11: 22 - 12 overall, 9 - 7 in the ACC (T-4th) (NCAA 2nd Round)
2011 - 12: 16 - 15 overall, 8 - 8 in the ACC (7th)
2012 - 13: 13 - 18 overall, 5 - 13 in the ACC (11th)

As Chuck mentioned, Coach K took Duke to the NCAA Tournament in his fourth season. Since that 1983-84 season, Duke has only failed to quialify for NCAA Tournament one time (the 1994-95 season). That season, Coach K only coached the first twelve games of the season. He was forced to take a leave of absence for the final nineteen games while recovering from back surgery.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

That third bad year, Duke was led by two freshmen

Mar 26, 2013, 11:30 AM [ in reply to Here are the year by year comparisons.... ]

Named Dawkins and Bilas. As sophomores, they led Duke to the tourney. As seniors, they led them to the championship game. Does Clemson have a Johnny Dawkins?

dont buy this

coach k is the exception, not the rule

how many guys stink after years 1-3 and CONTINUE TO STINK yrs 4,5,6

there has been one or two like K for every hundred that flame out and need to be terminated

brownell is a good coach for a mid-major

commit to the program thru proven winners for ACC quality competition

thats the only way

Big difference is direction of the program/recruiting

Mar 26, 2013, 10:32 AM

Coach K landed strong recruits that stuck around like Jay Bilas, Billy King, Quinn Snyder, etc that built the foundation of the run. Brownell doesn't seem to have those type of recruits or ability to get those type of players.
