Clemson's "Deaf Valley"???

Feb 12, 2017, 2:24 PM

http://www.nytimes.com/1981/11/07/sports/clemson-basking-with-8-0-record.html

16th paragraph...

"Football is serious business in ''Deaf Valley,'' the popular name for Frank Howard Field. Supporters arrive days in advance to camp out, no umbrellas are allowed in the stadium during games, and no vendors wander through the aisles to disturb the 43,000 season-ticket holders."

I know our fans were so loud back in the day (70s or 80s) that the the ACC instituted a rule where a plenty was called if the crowd got so loud when the opponents' had the ball. But, I've never heard our stadium being called Deaf Valley. Anyone heard this before or did this reporter have a bit of the corn-fuse with us and LSU?

Confused? How about plain stupid. The stadium has a sign indicating "Death Valley." I am fairly certain it has been there since the Ford era. Old timers what do you recall on the signage? I may be incorrect, but think not.

Go Tigers!

The late Lonnie McMillian, former football coach at Presbyterian College, told sports writers in 1948 that he had "to take his team up to Clemson and play in death valley" where they rarely scored or gained a victory. The nickname stuck to an extent, but when Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard started calling it that in the 1950s, the nickname really caught on.

Years later LSU started calling their stadium "Deaf Valley".

But the newscasters and fans didn't always get it right and it morphed into Death Valley. They really should take that sign don form their fiscad.
