Clemson basketball was began as a way to

Feb 17, 2019, 3:24 PM

keep football players in shape before spring ball. The 1 time we won a conference tourney back in the Banks McFadden hoops days we turned down post season play because it interfered with spring ball. Our school preference for football has paid off. 80% of TV revenue is football money. Our school passion is football. We love football.

I want us to do well in hoops but my passion is directed toward football. We are doomed to above averageness in basketball and it will always be thus. We will have a sweet 16 team here and there and every half century or so an elite 8 team. I can live with that. Just don't embarrass us and be reasonably competitive. Brad Brownell can do this for us.

Okay, make the decision, but who makes it. Like we don't support it? We have probably the best facilities in the country, per ESPN. Our BB coach has a new extended contract, making top dollars! And still we don't recruit worth a ####. Now who is that on?? So what else do we need to provide, escort services?? From what we put into our BB program, the return continues to be absurd. I don't have an answer, but apparently neither does our athletic department so we continue along the same losing path. Whatever we are doing now, ain't working. Duh!

Lots of incorrect facts in your post.

Feb 17, 2019, 4:53 PM

Our facilities are not the best in the nation. They aren’t even close to being the best in the ACC. Prior to the revocation, they were the worst in the conference.

Brownell’s salary is middle of the pack as far as ACC coaches’ salaries.

Clearly, our school’s investment in basketball isn’t nearly as substantial as you think. Perhaps that’s why you seem so mad about our basketball program and believe that it is underachieving so much.

If facilities don’t matter then we have wasted ~$125MM on football facilities

Basketball vs football facilities spending

Feb 18, 2019, 12:37 AM

I don't understand the constant reframe I read on Tnet by some about short changing resources for Clemson basketball. Sure for much of our history that is likely true but not the last two decades.

We have spent nearly $95 million on basketball facilities in the last 16 years. $31 million in 2003 and $63.5 million in 2016.

So if we have spent $125 million on football, with 120 football players, that averages out to about $1,042,000 per player.

Take the $95 million on basketball divided by 27 players (14 on men's team roster this year + 13 on women's team roster), that comes to $3,518,000 per player. Nearly 3.5 times more per player spent on basketball facilities than football facilities.

As far as salaries go, Dabo did not start with a big salary. He and his staff have earned their big raises. I am sure we would reward basketball success with increased salaries as well.

Bottom line, I don't understand the argument that the university has not supported basketball in the last 15 years. What else should they be doing with regard to facilities?

The parts of Dukes facilities that matter to players are

... top notch.

Too many times fans mistake creature comforts in the arena for what actually brings in great basketball recruits.

Players don’t sit in the stands and they don’t buy concessions or pee in the restrooms.

They occupy the parts of the facility you never see.

Players will be impressed by player/coach related facilities.

Fans will flock to watch them win in almost any arena, but they will stay away in droves for a losing team.

True. May have started that way but b-ball is big business now. It was no way we were going to compete when you had to be a conference championship or win the ACC Tournament etc but with a rich conference history as the best, we should be able to recruit well enough to be in the 64 every year... if nothing else, kids get to play against the best talent in the nation and I hope we push that.

It’s worked for miss st, Kentucky, ole miss etc and even the coots in football recruiting. I just can’t help but to think a good coach couldn’t get talent to Clemson now with all the visibility the university has.

As for no support- you get a winning exciting b-ball team, the fans will support it... it’s already helping with CAB in the women’s game. She may turn out to be a shyatt but no denying her fight and personality is infectious. Much like Dabo’s.

we need to change coaches

Feb 17, 2019, 4:52 PM

Often in order to keep the ‘fans’ happy’.

Dabo has shown that stability in the coaching staff doesn’t work

Its a great advantage to your recruiting efforts when you try to surprise the players with a new coach every few years.
Most of these young guys today don’t care who they play for as long as the uniforms are pretty

Ok. I have summed it up for you. No charge

Thanks. And I agree with you on all the points. I’m not advocating a coaching change. Just merely stating an opinion thst I think we should be able to recruit and do well.

Amen!

I remember times like two soccer national nattys in the eighties. I remember our golf team winning one. I remember when we excelled in all so-called minor sports. Haven't now, in years. The administration doesn't seem to care. We can be great in any sport if we care enough!

Feb 17, 2019, 5:54 PM

Agree. Remember all those really well. Hopefully we’ll get back there in soccer. We need too. Golf is consistently great. Just hard to win a natty in golf.

We might this year but I’d have bet my last nickel that we would have if Doc had come back and not made that boneheaded decision to turn pro. Byrd and Penley could have taught him a lot this year. Gordon is going to be a great golfer.
