Clemson University to Revise "Associate Director of Rainbow Initiatives" Position After Questioning

Clemson University was set to hire an "Associate Director of Rainbow Initiatives." When questioned regarding the position's "Space Management" portion of job description, the University denied the consideration of an "LGBTQIA+ community space," and expressed that the job posting would be revised:

"Clemson University is revising a job posting for an “Associate Director of Rainbow Initiatives” that appeared to imply that the school is establishing an LGBTQ resource center.
The job posting referred to creating “a comfortable, safe, accessible resource center" for LGBTQ students and allies, a demand that was recently made by Clemson's Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) student group.
A university spokesperson, however, insisted that "no special space that would serve any particular group of students has been discussed or approved by senior administration."

Clemson University is revising a job posting for an “Associate Director of Rainbow Initiatives” that appeared to imply that the school is establishing an LGBTQ resource center.

“Great news! The Gantt Multicultural Center at Clemson University is excited to hire an Associate Director for Rainbow Initiatives,” the Clemson University President’s LGBTQ Commission announced on July 7, only to delete the job posting following inquiries from Campus Reform.

Approximately 40 percent of the job was to deal with “Education, Social, and Supportive Programming,” such as overseeing events like “National Coming Out Week,” “Trans* Awareness Week,” “Rainbow Thanksgiving,” “Pride Week,” “a large-scale annual Drag Show,” and a “Lavender Graduation.”

The associate director would also oversee “Ally Training,” a program that aims to increase awareness of LGBTQ issues, specifically addressing topics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

As a “contributing member of the Gantt Multicultural Center,” the Associate Director would serve on the LGBTQ commission itself. Altheia Richardson, the Director of the Gantt Multicultural Center, recently triggered a firestorm when she floated the idea of an ideological test for members of Clemson’s student government.

Clemson’s Student Government also stoked controversy with a proposal to make “Ally Training” mandatory for faculty and staff.

The associate director was also slated to serve as staff advisor for the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA)—a group of “open-minded students, faculty, and friends that have come together to share their support” for the LGBT community—as part of a larger goal of facilitating “the growth and establishment of additional LGBTQ campus-based organizations.”

In an April open letter, the student SAGA president complained that the LGBTQ+ community was treated as “simply another ‘student group,’” and demanded that Clemson create an LGBTQ safe space. Clemson’s student government later responded by passing a resolution calling for a “permanent space” for the LGBTQ+ community on campus.

The job posting appeared to allude to this in a section detailing “Space Management” responsibilities, which stated that the associate director would be responsible for providing “a comfortable, safe, accessible resource center for anyone interested in a place to talk, listen, or find support and materials around LGBTQ issues.”

Campus Reform previously reached out to Clemson Director of Media Relations Robin Denny for comment regarding the space, and was told that “no location has been identified for use as a community space for our LGBTQIA+ students at this time.”

Campus Reform reached out to Vice-President of University Relations Mark Land to determine if the university’s position had changed.

“Clemson continues to be a welcoming place that strives to serve the needs of all its students, however, no special space that would serve any particular group of students has been discussed or approved by senior administration,” Land responded.

When asked to clarify the Associate Director for Rainbow Initiatives’ “Space Management” role, he indicated that the section had been included erroneously.

“I can’t speak to the exact process for producing the job description that you saw, but I have been told that the description is being re-evaluated,” he explained. “There is no specific ‘space management’ component to the role. The individual in this position will serve as a resource for our GLBTQ community but we aren’t considering a specific space for this—or any other single group—at this time.”

As of press time, the Associate Director for Rainbow Initiatives job listing was inaccessible on the Clemson job website."

IMO this should include student government, current Clemson staff and Alumni ( Those who give money to help with student scholarships etc.)

I think this should not be a knee jerk reaction based on political correctness. If I am giving money to Clemson I would like to know all about which I consider special interest minority groups and organizations.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

"Lavender Graduation"? DK know what that entails exactly but

WTH is this world coming to? Never heard of such and wonder why it is needed for fair treatment.

Um, isn't this exactly what these kind of groups claim to want? Now it's not good enough to be treated the same as everyone else?

I totally agree with you gottigers81. IMO it appears they want special treatment! If the lgbt community wants to be treat like everyone else why do they need a "Coming Out Week", a host of parades , a safe place space at Clemson , lgbt celebration day, etc....

When I got married we did not have to have a special prade, media coverage, special treatment and politically correct words or phrases or words we could not use. Over the years we have become a soft oversensitive society.

These special interests groups are putting a great deal of financial pressure on various levels of government, employment, schools and universities etc... if these groups want to be left alone and live their lives the way they want,

Then why do these groups constantly draw attention to themselves, demand laws to suit their cause, or have to be given special rights.

The positions that have to be created for minority interest groups are the reason HS's, college's, employers' etc cannot hire more professors, teachers, build more schools help the underprivileged, feed those who are hungry, etc...

I'm all for LGBT rights, but I think this is a terrible idea. As far as I can see, "Safe Spaces" are simply locations where people can't speak freely & honestly with one another, which I believe is the best way for people to improve themselves. I think the best thing that can be done for the gay community in the South is for them to be presented as normal people who simply have a different sexual preference.

The South is far & away the furthest behind when it comes to the acceptance of gays/gay rights/etc. and progress needs to be made in the region, but how is creating this space going to help enlighten those who are against/afraid of/don't know gay people?
