Clemson Downs Oral Roberts in Non-Conference Finale

Sep 21, 2019, 8:58 AM

MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Jori Radtke posted her first double-double in a Clemson uniform to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) victory over Oral Roberts in Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion Friday night. In Clemson’s second and final match of the Diet Coke Classic tournament, the Northern Illinois transfer posted a season-high 17 kills along with 10 digs. With the win, the Tigers improved to 6-5 on the season to round out non-conference action.

The Tiger offense came out swinging in the first set as they dominated Oral Roberts, 25-14, to give Clemson its largest victory in a single set this season. The Tigers hit .515 for the first game and held ORU hitters to a .171 hitting percentage. Clemson’s first contact was also stout as the Tigers sided-out on 80 percent of Golden Eagle serves. Radtke tallied five kills and hit .556 in the opening game, while Alyssa Deloney recorded four of her 12 kills in game No. 1.

Clemson opened the second on a 10-4 run, but the Golden Eagles would chip away at the Tiger lead throughout the set before Clemson found itself with set point, 24-21, a few minutes later. Back-to-back ORU points cut the Clemson lead to one (24-23), but a Golden Eagle attack error gave Clemson its 25th point and a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Deloney tallied five kills in the second game on 10 swings with just one error to hit .400 for the set.

Coming out of the break, Oral Roberts responded by winning its lone set of the match 25-23, in large to three 4-0 runs. After trailing 18-14, Clemson called timeout and fought its way back to tie the game, 20-20. However, the Tigers could not sustain their momentum as three CU errors helped ORU registered three of their last five points for the set.

In the fourth, it was Radtke and Kaylin Korte who would help seal the set and match for Clemson. The outside hitter duo combined for 13 of Clemson’s 16 kills for the set. Korte posted six of her 13 kills and hit .455 in the closing set, while Radtke registered seven kills in the game No. 4. The Tigers took the lead early, leading by as many as six (22-16) towards the end, but the Golden Eagles did not go away quietly. Oral Roberts finessed a 6-2 run to put the set within reach, 24-22. A Clemson timeout halted all hopes for the Golden Eagles as Radtke recorded the final kill of the match to give the Tigers the set (25-22) and match.

Clemson setter Mckenna Slavik notched her third double-double of the season as the freshman finished the match with 43 assists and 15 digs.

Up next, Clemson opens ACC play in Jervey Gym against Boston College (7-3, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. and against Syracuse (1-4, 0-0 ACC) on Sunday, Sept. 29 a 1 p.m. Friday’s match against the Eagles is set to air on RSN and is subject to blackout on ACCNX. Sunday’s contest against the Orange is slated to stream on ACCNX.
