Their rankings include & combine both public & private universities which makes the rankings unfair for many public universities, like Clemson.
Out of 500 universities Clemson ranked #189, Usc 289, Furman 135, Duke 5, NDame 28, UNC 33, Davidson 59, WF 64, GT 71, NCst 112, Navy 73, OHst 100, Wofford 208 and ALABAMA was tied for 401-500 with 99 other universities!
Also, their rankings use 15 factors across Four main categories.
40% of each school’s overall score comes from student “outcomes”, including graduate’s salaries and debt;
30% comes from academic resources, including how much a college spends in teaching;
20% from student engagement, including whether students feel prepared to use their education in the real world..
and 10% from the learning engagement, including the diversity of the student body & academic staff.
The 10% “Environment” factor assessed the ~>diversity of the university’s community.
You can see where this going, and going against a lot of colleges.
Still, Clemson’s individual rankings per individual category were pretty good:
Outcomes: 114
Resources: 36
Engagement: 73
Environment: >400!
USC, Furman, NCst & Alabama also had the >400 environment ranking.
Note & Thought: Wall Street Journal is a rag that has a staff that can be as bias & political as well as anyone of us, so take this with a grain of whatever!
Also, when an educational institution pays the head football sports coach $9,300,000 per year while that same University's President received maybe 95% less in income, then you can see where a Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, Yale or Duke are winners off the field.

Of course, that's harder to measure, so they just use metrics that are easier to measure.

It’s an easy fix. All Clemson has to do is open a deli, located in a gutter filled with carcinogenic sludge that kills people but creates super rats. Then we’ll have a #1 environment.....like NY.

"environment" as defined by the WSJ is total crap. It is based on superficial definitions of diversity. Having different skin color does not equate to diverse thoughts or background. The colleges listed high on the list have zero true debates in the classroom, as they are all forced into liberal thought patterns. Anyone that supports 2nd Amendment rights at Harvard or UC Berkley will be chased from campus. This list is as useless as the "journalists" that put it together.

The WSJ rankings tend to favor small, liberal arts schools. I think the US News rankings are more accurate.
