Chuck Came to Town

Mar 11, 2019, 11:55 AM

My long time friends, Chuck and his wife Sue, came for a visit this past weekend. I've posted a story about Chuck in the past as he was the originator and the play-by-play announcer for the first ever broadcast of a Clemson basketball game. Neither one of us can remember the exact date but believe it was in 1963. Chuck conned me to being the color commentator. He later went to Furman as the Sports Publicity Director. We had a lot of laughs recalling that game in Fike. We went to the basketball game in Littlejohn last Saturday and had planned to go to the baseball games but the weather was not to our liking.

Chuck was also involved in another important Clemson event, the admission of Harvey Gant. There was a recent thread about Gant's admission to Clemson. On that day, Chuck was assigned the task of escorting Gant around the campus to the various places involved in his enrolment.

I mentioned to Chuck about my posting stories about him on this site and encouraged him to join this site and post some of his memories during his time at Clemson. For the past ten years he has had a radio ministry, "It's a God Thing".

Joe, I enjoy your posts. I remember the events and things you talk about. I was a student Class of 1963 (1959 -1963), so the times are still fresh in my memory. The admission of Harvey Gant was a big deal. Overall it was handled with Clemson class. Harvey is a great alumni.

bicycle, sat on the hill overlooking Bowman and watched the goings-on of the hordes of news crews and state policeman parked there. Of course, every night, the 6:00 o'clock news had carried video from universities throughout the South where there was much incredibly stupid vitriol on display as most of the racist old guard got to watch changing times up close and in-person.

But Mr. Gantt's enrollment at Clemson was a huge non-event. Hundreds came to protect Clemson students and townsfolk from absolutely nothing. The news broadcasts showed a campus in a small, sleepy Southern town where folks had far better things to do with the beginning of the semester.

No clouds of tear gas. No snarling dogs. No disturbances of ANY kind on campus. Soon, I got back on my bike and pedaled home to avoid any admonitions from good ol' Mom concerning my late afternoon whereabouts

I(1962-66) love your "historical posts". Hope Chuck will join.

Thanks for posting this, Joe. What fun times we had then...lots of significant changes during those days. Sitting with you (and daughter, Linda) watching the Tigers whoop Syracuse was a special (and I'll admit teary) time for me and my Sweet Sue. I joined the Clemson Alumni/Public relations staff in March, 1962. Sue and were married in August, 1962 and our first home was in faculty housing behind the former Clemson House.

You and late wife, Mary Lynn, along with Hugh and Sara Gambrell (who became "God Parents" to our first two kiddos both born in Anderson) took us under your wings and easily converted us to Adopted Tigers.

Soon, I'll post info on the Basketball Board about the genesis of the basketball network and how Coach Howard re-acted when I asked if I could broadcast basketball games.

It was a great thing that HG was escorted around the campus by Chuck instead of a phalanx of soldiers... Maybe the Clemson University Senate should concentrate on how GOOD Clemson has been to making our country ONE nation under God instead of trashing our University...
