maybe he's just a protester of some of golf's stupid rules

as a lifelong golfer, there are many rules that are just idiotic. Maybe he should be celebrated as a heroic objective protester against the tyranny of the evil overseers.
Touching the sand in a sand trap with your club (Reed's deal) -- why is that a penalty. If your ball doesn't move and your lie isn't altered, why does it matter? You know if your ball is in a trap and you accidentally DROP YOUR CLUB while standing 20 feet away, THAT is a penalty. Same with touching a blade of grass in a hazard.
One was putting with the flagstick in being a stroke penalty --- but they FINALLY wised up and changed that one.
Having to play a ball that landed in a divot --- isn't that the definition of "ground under repair" = free drop?? It's damaged ground. Evidently not to the golf rulers.
Wind blowing your ball when you are trying to putt.....why is that my fault and a stroke penalty for me?
(PGA) Keeping and signing a scorecard in a tourney AND being DQd if you sign it and it's wrong. Other people keep your score for you, why is this still a rule?
And by golf rules, you're supposed to call all these penalties ON YOURSELF. Imagine THAT in other sports. A basketball player admitting he fouled a guy or touched the ball going out of bounds. A center admitting he held the nose tackle, or a WR saying he really didn't catch the pass. A baseball runner calling himself out on a steal. Yeah.
But you're right. Patrick Reed is a pompous jerk.

Golf is an honest sport and there are no referees, unlike

every other sport. It would be so easy to cheat at golf when you are 100 yards away from anyone else, if you were so inclined.
That character revealing self enforcement is one of the many things I love about the sport.
Agree with all of the others.

Here's one interpretation of the rule.

Basically, you can now move loose impediments in the bunker. So, let's just call the thousands of tiny pieces of rocks (aka "sand") as loose impediments.

Yeah, I get the rule

but there is bending and then breaking. Removing sand from behind your ball like he did and especially the amount he did, improved his lie tremendously. That is an infraction in itself.
He knew what he was doing, knew it was a breach, and didn't care.
