It's a local Hall of Fame for sports in Gaston County, NC (Bessemer City, Gastonia, McAdenville area). He wasn't a recipient... He was a guest speaker.

Actually went last year to dinner to see Coach Larry Penley be inducted into the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame. It is a group that supports athletics in Gaston County. Don't know anything else about it.

Right next door Cleveland County (Shelby, Kings Mountain, etc.) also has a Sports Hall of Fame. Kevin Mack (Clemson and Cleveland Brown RB) and David Thompson (NCSU & NBA forward) are probably the 2 best known members.
