Calling all Geeks! Anyone ever had to deal with that FBI-

Jun 25, 2013, 4:05 PM

MoneyPak virus? I got it about two months ago, but was able to go into "Safe Mode" and remove it. Got it again last week while looking at used refrigerator ads(from CL)and the computer won't even open in Safe Mode nor give me a command prompt. Norton let it in!

I am not of the technology-inclined. Since it's a slow day I thought I would toss it out there.

I heard there is a guy in Pickens with a shop that has software to beat this thing. Anyone know him?

Format and reinstall the OS if you know what you're doing is the way to go but, I take it that you do not know how to do that, that is why I suggested Norton's. PS, that virus can be time released so you could have been looking at "something else" as you say , but.......

You have been looking at ####, haven't you? That is where this virus is picked up 9 out of 10 time or you have opened a email link from a hacker sending emails to you from someone you know( that if you look at it you should know better than to open) If you have money and can go to best buy, Norton's has a couple of items that can clear it out. If you take it to someone to clear out the virus, expect anywhere from $50 t0 $100 and that will not stop it from maybe coming back. There are some really nasty people out there right now flooding #### sites with this virus. bewhere,

Do you actually know what you're talking about? I'm betting no...

"Hackers" don't send out links, and "9 out of 10 times" being caused by #### is just asinine.

Viruses like this infect not only ####, but pretty much any website with ads at some point or another. I've seen it on imageshack, facebook, and various blogs, among other places.

Best buy is pretty much crap, as are the rest of the big box stores (they charge an arm and a leg, and aren't that good at virus removal). A smaller store is the way to go, assuming they're remotely competent.

Big-name antiviruses are mostly crap as well, unless you're talking about the corporate versions. We've had decent luck with Vipre and the free AV from Microsoft.

I'd expect anybody worth a #### to charge 50-125 to repair a virus like this, depending on the severity.

And for what it's worth, I own a computer repair shop in Greenville. We've been there since 1998, and we've fixed hundreds of these type of viruses.

See, you didn't follow the cardinal rule of refrigeration:

Jun 25, 2013, 4:27 PM

Nothing good ever comes from buying a used refrigerator.

Get a program called HitmanPro. It'll make a bootable USB flash drive that can get rid of that FBI MonkyPak thing.

Get a Mac

Jun 25, 2013, 10:25 PM

I am done with PCs.

I got a Mac for work over 4 years ago and never had a problem with it and I use it a lot more than my home PC (and I work remotely so I don't have anything fancy on the Mac - use it right out of the box). In that same 4 years I am on my 2nd PC and I have to hold my breath everytime I turn it on because 1/2 the time Windows won't start.

Despite running Kapersky at full strength it has a virus and the only way to clean it per all the experts is a wipe and reload, including Windows 7 which I cannot find my disk for. I backed up all the photos and documents remotely and I'm going to get a Mac. So sick of this.

Re: Get a Mac

Jun 25, 2013, 11:21 PM

Macs are no guarantee against viruses, but most Mac owners don't know that.

This is a great story from last year: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2012/04/mac-os-x-report-virus-infects-600000-computers/

Yes, macs get viruses. No, not as often as PCs, but since most people with a Mac don't run AV, they wouldn't know anyway. And given that new viruses are running across multiple platforms, it's only a matter of time before Macs are hit harder.

It is definitely the work of a twisted mind...this virus is notorious amongst repair guys! I was looking at AutoTrader when it hit me & Norton didn't stop it either.
