Being honest with oneself...

May 25, 2020, 7:29 AM

The thread related to learning golf took me back a couple decades...or so...

Regarding wives. In the early years of our marriage, my wife asked me to teach her tennis. For the first time in my life, I had to truly look myself in the mirror and acknowledge a reality...a flaw, if you will, about myself. In that moment of clarity...and humbling myself in a way I never knew was possible, I posed this question: "Would you like to learn tennis, or be married?"

We'll celebrate 36 years early next month. Someone made the right choice! ;)

You're right - that stuff doesn't turn out well.

50 years ago, my wife and I had just gotten married and I decided that we should do some things together. She had no interest in golf, so I suggested we try tennis and thought she might do well since she was a ballet dancer and should have good footwork.

So, she went shopping and bought tennis shoes, dresses, racquet and other necessities and we went to the courts where I proceeded to "teach" her how to play. After she showed some ability to volley back over the net, she was standing at the net after hitting one to my backhand. Something in me snapped and I made the decision to smash that backhand with topspin. It hit her right square between the eyes. She just stood there for a few seconds, dropped her racquet, turned around and walked off the court and got in the car...... she was done with tennis and I never asked her to participate in any sports with me again..... and she never complained that I didn't.

Ha ha! The inner competitor came out at the WRONG time!

Bet that ride home was iffy.

I'm not sure "iffy" is the right word. "Quiet" might be a better description.

Coming up on #38 here, and I never want my wife to play tennis with me. I also don't watch those reality shows that she loves, and she doesn't watch college football with me (as I tend to get a little animated). The past few years has been therapeutic for me as we win all the time and I relax more. :)
