Too bad like every other top prospect we seem to land, he'll get drafted in the 1st or 2nd round and sign with a pro team and we'll never get to see him throw a pitch in a Clemson jersey. Imagine how difficult it must be to recruit for college baseball. You recruit a bunch of guys really hard and they commit to you and you're feeling confident you're going to sign a great class and then they get drafted highly and go to the majors. Something needs to change with this format

You're right. Been saying for years that all major sports should have the same rule as NFL. 3 yrs removed from college. Doing it disservice to the kids. Selling em a pipe dream and they're getting hurt by it

While I agree with the sentiment...

Doing this in baseball would likely mean eliminating at least one whole level of the minor league system. Even if it was one of the short season levels... who wants to be the one that tells 30 US cities that they no longer have a minor league baseball team. Who is going to compensate the owners of those teams and the stadiums that they play in? I can maybe see using the one and done basketball model, but going to the football model would significantly impact teams ability to field all of their minor league teams... especially in the short term.

Baseball has developed strong minor league system. College football is the NFL's minor league. That's the difference.

Its fair for the players, fair for the teams and fair for the schools. If you are good enough you have the option to go right out of high school, go ahead and get your career started. But once you pass on that option, you are going to develop for 3 years. You then still have leverage to go back to school after your 3rd year. Its a great balance of opportunity and stability.
Its much better than the 1 and done in basketball. Its not likely that a football player would be physically ready at high school, but the ability to go back to school after the draft would protect players that didn't go as high as they thought.

D1 College baseball splits 11.7 scholarships between 27 or so players. Its not really a hard choice to take 1st/2nd round signing bonus money over a likely partial scholarship that you have to commit 3 years to. JUCO might be a better deal since they can offer 24 full scholarships, you can get drafted each year your there and still have the option to transfer to a D1 school your last 2 years.

Absolutely!!! It not only screws teams out of their recruits, it also screw the schools out of all the time and the money used out of the athletic department bank that's put into recruiting these kids for the Majors to come in and ###### them up. Something should have been done about that dumb crap long long time ago!!!

Can't remember the year

But I think it was one of Leggett's first years. Almost all of his recruits signed with major league teams. He had to scramble to find us some players.
