Any Mechanics out there ?

Oct 4, 2017, 8:34 AM

I have a 2012 Nissan Frontier and some mornings it will not crank unless I jump it.
The problem is not the battery it is charged but still will not crank.
I have changed out both CSC's and for awhile seemed like it was fixed.
The only time it does this is when the weather is cool to cold.
I don't think it's the starter because like I said when I just touch it with the jumper cables it starts right up.
Then it will run fine for days even months sometimes.
When it does act up is after it's been parked overnight.

I have had Chevys, Fords and Traded a tundra for this truck.
As far as power and ride for a 6 c truck it's the best.
This is something simple but will never act up at the garage.
I know people with 250 K on Nissans never heard they were a POS

My wife had one of those when we got married. No AC, no radio, no carpets - stripped as stripped can be. Very dependable though. Of course she gets all the newest cars now, and I have the old ones. Oh wait...got a new 2016 Nissan Frontier SL last year, so check that.

I recommend that the OP have the battery checked. Sounds like a dead cell in the battery to me. Autozone or Advanced Auto or one of those places will check it for free I think.

I had a similar problem awhile back

Oct 4, 2017, 8:47 AM

battery had a bad cell. Battery was "good" voltage-wise but the bad cell caused the issue when starting with the cold-cranking amperage.

Had to replace the battery (which luckily for me was under warranty).

I replaced the battery and have taken it to 2 shops and left it for a week.
Every time they tried it crank like a charm

Have you actually had the battery tested, as in load tested? Voltage check really isn't enough. Sounds like it's spinning faster when using the jumpers.

I think advance will test it free

Re: I had a similar problem awhile back

Oct 4, 2017, 8:54 AM

I had someone else tell me this I might try that today.
It was doing this a couple years ago and I bought a new battery about 8 mos ago .
It did good for awhile now it's acting up again

If it's below 30 usually but it only got down in the 50s last night.
It use to only do it when very cold now it's been hard to crank all week.
This morning I had to jump it.
But when it's hot outside I have never had a problem

Last oil change? Obviously synthetic, right?

Oct 4, 2017, 9:01 AM

Get a shop to test your alternator before you replace another battery. If your oil is old or not synthetic, it might be taking too much to get it moving. Possibly consider getting lighter winter oil.

Make sure all electrical stuff in the car is turned off before you crank. Also consider checking to see if anything is draining your battery slightly when your car is off.

You might just have a bad cell in your battery. Which either means replacing or dealing with it by either getting a battery heater or jumping it. I'd recommend getting a handheld battery jumper. Charge it overnight and then just hook to your car in the morning and boom. Very quick and easy.

Replace the battery. It may look charged but cold cranking amps are not there. Probably a bad cell.

But I might just bite the bullet and buy a new one.

Battery and alternator for free.

I'm sure Napa and pep boys will likely as well.

If it was the alternator your truck would die soon as that battery drained.

Likely a bad battery. As some1 mentioned you may want to drop down an oil weight or think about getting a higher cold cranking battery.

I KNOW Advanced has one because I've used it before on a battery replacement.

If you replace the battery, buy it from Walmart

Alternator?

Oct 4, 2017, 9:19 AM

Go to advanced and have it (and the battery) tested. It's free. Sometimes you can buy defective batteries and alternators. The alternator may actually check out as ok, but have a bad ground causing it to leak electricity from the battery when the car isn't operating.

Re: Any Mechanics out there ?

Oct 4, 2017, 9:34 AM

One thing not mentioned was possible corrosion between the battery terminals and the cables. This wouldn't matter when jump starting as you would connect to the cables and bypass any corrosion. Try cleaning the connections from the cables to the battery posts.

Good luck

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This. Inspect the cables and cable ends thoroughly.***

Re: Any Mechanics out there ?

Oct 4, 2017, 9:39 AM

Agree with most folks that this looks like a battery issue. The are only a few components in the starting system of most cars:

The fact that once you get enough juice to the solenoid/starter (via jumper) the car cranks really points towards the battery not having enough amps to crank it in the cold. It appears that all the other components are working properly since the car cranks with enough juice. The only other explanation I can think of is that for some reason your solenoid/starter needs more amps than normal to crank but have never seen/known that to happen. In my experience, when a solenoid or starter goes bad it just quits working.

If this is your second battery in a year, it could be one of two things:
1. The battery you purchased has a defect (not common but does happen)
2. You may have a bad/weak alternator that is not charging your battery properly (under or over charge) and is causing your batteries to go bad.

Re: Any Mechanics out there ?

Oct 4, 2017, 9:59 AM

Somebody told me the other day that the starter might not be grounded.
He said I could run another ground wire myself and that would fix it.
IDK if it wasn't grounded it would never start.
Anyway I'm going to get it all checked out once again here in a little bit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Any Mechanics out there ?

Oct 4, 2017, 9:52 AM

Alternator or a bad ground somewhere. Id say the alternator in 2012, unless your last battery was leaking or youve been in some salt water. Just have the alternator tested.

Oct 4, 2017, 12:02 PM

just needed charging.

Took it to my mechanic and he tested it and said there was a bad cell.

I came & got it and took it back to Advanced and they tested it again - out of the car - it came back as a bad cell.

I had the receipt and they replaced it for free even though I bought it in June, 2016.

Interstate HAS to have an even better warranty than that.

I would take battery & have it tested someplace OTHER than where you purchased it, first. And then take it to the place you purchased it.

Soun ds like a bad cell to me. It happens - even on more expensive / better batteries.

Oct 4, 2017, 11:03 AM

If it turns over fine but just won't "catch", it won't be your battery or alternator, it is probably having trouble getting fuel into cylinders

I just got the battery checked and it did have a bad cell.
I bought it Feb 2016 it's a 6yr battery with 30 months of free replacement.
This truck is 5 years old and now 3 batteries.
We will see hopefully this will be the fix.

Oh yeah the positive post was lose on the battery itself so hopefully it's a factory defect.
The original battery lasted 4 years and hopefully this one was messed up because post was lose.
Not something in my truck killing batteries.
I think I ended up sitting pretty .
