A solution to BT's kicking woes from chip shot FG range

Dec 1, 2019, 12:25 PM

No matter where the ball is spotted from inside the 20, put Swinney at the 30 and make it a 40-yd FG. Problem solved.

I’m certainly no kicking expert, but...

it sure appears to me that Potter takes a very acute angle when lining up for a field goal, FWIW. Seems like most of those on other teams are coming at it from a straighter approach. I know, I know, we supposedly have coaches working with them (Pearman?) so no need to pass along this great observation to Dabo from an old geezer who has loved watching college football for the past 50 years!!

If a field goal is a likely next play and it’s a tight game, the play call should make sure the field goal comes from the left hash. Potter nearly always pushes a poor kick wide right.

It is kind of mind-boggling that programs like Alabama and Clemson can's seem to find consistent FG kickers...

We had a kid in our backyard in Anderson and he is
one of the best FG kickers in the nation. We either
didn't recruit him or he just wanted to go to Wake
Forest.

Bama has had horrible FG kicking for pretty much Saban's

Dec 1, 2019, 12:58 PM [ in reply to Re: A solution to BT's kicking woes from chip shot FG range ]

entire tenure. They generally have had good punting though.

Clemson has been pretty terrible at both kicking and punting throughout Dabo's tenure with the exception of Catman and Huegel's first season in 2015 (although he did miss 5 XPs that year!).

Punt snap the ball from the 20 back to the 35 to make

it a 45 yard FG. LOL

I just can't resist making a snide remark. Our problem s not with our field goal kicker, it's with our offense. If our offense scored a TD every time we are in field goal range we wouldn't need a field goal kicker.

I get the feeling Sabin has never been concerned with a field goal kicker during his recent success at Alabama. He probably felt his offense was capable of putting up enough points a victory was not dependent on a field goal.

Potter does a good job of putting his kick offs into the end zone.

Joe, I love you and respect you beyond belief. You were alive in the eras of 3-0 score lines***

My point is the offense can't always punch it in. FGs matter***

Buy him a pair of those Rodrigo glasses. Maybe that'll help.

Take a delay of game penalty. Twice if necessary

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why take penalties to push it back? The opponent takes over where the snap happens

Dec 1, 2019, 3:45 PM

This isn't the NFL, where the opponent takes over at the spot of the kick. The NFL have chockers at the kicker position too, so I hope we can all agree kickers do their best. Can't always make them. But, when you're more comfortable to be further away, do it.

Certainly couldn't hurt.***
