On October 1, 1970 the doctor's gave me the gift of surgery to follow up on the first one on 9/28 - a great way to turn 22 years old. Late in the day we learned that a typhoon was hitting us so hard that my part of the field hospital was going to be at least a few inches deep on the inside so we were going to move to higher ground. They covered us first with the typical army blankets and then with ponchos and any other plastic they could find. When I was rolled outside I could hear a very strong wind and could feel huge drops of rain pelting the plastic over me. I was told that the amount of rain was affecting all the troops in the field but they had all moved to higher ground. Not the best birthday ever.
