1989 Season

Crazy its been 30 years since the 89 season. That was the one season I think we missed out on a title, title #2. Crazy loses to GA Tech for Homecoming and Duke, DUKE!! The Duke game seemed to be especially crazy with a couple of Robert O'neal fumbled interceptions. Always heard those were the two weeks that the NCAA was on campus the most so must have been a big distraction. Was the end of one amazing ride with Danny Ford and now we are in the middle of another one with Dabo.. Don't see this one slowing down anytime soon.

with Chester McGlockton, Levon Kirkland, Ed McDaniel, Vance Hammond, James Lott, John Johnson, Dexter Davis, Ron Bodine among others. Plus an offense that featured Terry Allen and Wesley McFadden at runningback and Gary Cooper at wideout.

That was one brutal defense. I had forgotten how dominant those guys were. Incredible how much pressure they brought to bear on the Major.

My first Clemson football game was in '89.
Sadly, my family lived in Raleigh, thus it was in Durham. A sign of times to come because I '08 and '12.
That being said, my son's tigers are 58-4 since he was born and my daughter's are a perfect 18-0. Good times.

TU because my daughter has also enjoyed the same 58-4 Tigers. My son's Tigers are only 4-0 currently but he is hoping for good things!

Just think about this: Georgia Tech (which we out-gained by twice as much in a "L" in ATL that year) split the national title with Colorado. With the talent we had on the 1990 team, i'll never forgive Hatfield

a Natty in 90 and/or 91 had Danny stayed. The talent accumulated on defense from 88-92 was absolutely ridiculous.
The nucleus of 89 team returned in 90.

Don't buy the NCAA thing. There's a reason coach Ford
Sep 24, 2019, 9:48 AM

was paid $1 mil to go away and not talk about what happened. It was a power struggle between him and Max Lennon. The fight at Maryland didn't help matters. That team was the best team in the nation. The Duke game was @ Duke and in ultra sloppy rainy conditions. Duke was coached by a young Spurrier and it was literally and figuratively the perfect storm for them.
We beat UVA 34-20 the following week and then inexplicably lost to GT the week after. That defense, though...mercy. Every bit as good as our D last year or the '81 D. The LBs, alone, were like an NFL corp.

It was only minor infractions, but I think it was shortly after an idiot 3rd string QB saying a booster gave him a car not to transfer. Evidently, wasn't anything to it since it was not part of the reported infractions. There were plenty of people that were panicked after SMU got the death penalty. I still think the players should have carried through on their threat to strike. The idea of freshmen and transfers would not have gone over any better than no football.

The Duke game was really weird. Rainy, miserable day in Clemson, very few people around. I watched that game at the Upper Deck and I can't remember there being more than 4-5 people there.
The GT game that season was the only home game I missed as a student, so you can blame me for that loss. I was in downtown Greenville that afternoon playing in a band on the street behind the Hyatt. We were the opening act for the Fabulous Thunderbirds. There's a blast from the past.

I wasn't at the game - I watched on the big screen at the Upper Deck (the beer bar on the second floor above the bookstore across the street from TigerTown).

I spent a third of a tank of gas on the generator to watch that game. We still did not have power back after Hugo. The worst part of that game is that it gave rose to Spurrier's carer.

If I remember correctly, I think there was a huge student protest outside the president's house one night for DF.
Also, Chester McGlockton showed up at our house party one night, with my cute neighbor, and partied down with us all night! Good guy!

My wife and I went to the Gator Bowl with 2 other couples in 1989. That was the best team we had since the '81 team. Great game and great time in Jacksonville.

This was a time when going to a Bowl Game actually meant something. Major Harris and West Virginia talked trash all week. Them Danny turn off that Defense loose on Major Harris. He got his butt kicked all night. Then it was great when the broadcaster interviewed his. She was so mad. I think she said her son should take himself out of the game because nobody was blocking for him. It was hard to stop that defense in 89. I was at the SC game where we won 45-0.
I remember that night so well because driving back from Columbia I heard Jim Philips ask Chuck Reedy I think it was him, if the rumors were true he would have a new boss next season. Chuck dodged the question. I did not think anymore about it until my wife called me just before an out of town meeting to tell me DF had resigned. I went nuts in my hotel room.
Talking about the Duke game that was one of the few times Clemson just looked like they did not want to be there. Those were some great years for Clemson. It was a lot of fun going to the games.
See Gamecock fans this what you call having a real football history worth talking about.
