105.5

Sep 21, 2018, 9:31 AM

I heard them talking about offensive line recruiting this morning. They went on a long tangent about how developing is more important than stars, although stars still matter too. I guess that their defense of Coach Caldwell is that he is great at developing players, so I had to see if that was true. Here are all of the offensive line recruits that he has signed:

2012:
3-star Jay Guillermo (undrafted)
3-star Patrick Destefano (career ended)
3-star Isaiah Battle (supplemental draft)
3-star Oliver Jones (career ended)

2013:
4-star Tyrone Crowder (undrafted)
3-star Maverick Morris (undrafted)

2014:
3-star Justin Falcinelli
3-star Taylor Hearn (undrafted)

2015:
5-star Mitch Hyatt
4-star Jake Fruhmorgen (transferred)
3-star Noah Green (career ended)
3-star Zach Giella

2016:
4-star John Simpson
4-star Sean Pollard
3-star Tremayne Anchrum
3-star Chandler Reeves
3-star Cade Stewart

2017:
4-star Matt Bockhorst
3-star Blake Vinson
3-star Noah DeHond

2018:
5-star Jackson Carman
3-star Jordan McFadden

So, here’s what he has done at Clemson so far. His first class had one player get drafted. Two of them had their careers cut short, but if I remember correctly, neither of them had started a game at Clemson when their careers unfortunately ended, so neither probably would have been drafted. His next class had 3 guys go undrafted, and likely 4, as I’m sure Falcinelli won’t get drafted. We finally get to Mitch Hyatt, who will get drafted. But, has he really gotten a lot better since his freshman season? Because I can’t really see much improvement. I think after his freshman year, a lot of people anticipated him going 1st round, but that’s not going to happen now. Giella will not get drafted. I think Simpson has a good chance of getting drafted, but I do not believe Pollard and Anchrum will. Reeves and Stewart will definitely not be drafted. Jackson Carman is almost certainly going to get drafted. It’s far too early to tell for Bockhorst, Vinson, DeHond, and McFadden.

I get it, development is more important than stars. But, when you aren’t recruiting those stars, then it becomes much harder to develop. Caldwell hasn’t recruited that well, and he hasn’t developed players that well either. This class is looking like another weak offensive line class. Hopefully things turn around for this class. Anyways, I have to run to Spanish class. As always, go Tigers!

There has been such a glaring lack of recruiting stars on the O-Line - and every year I ask why Caldwell is still around.

Because our coaches recruit a territory not a position.

Caldwell may have had his hand in the recruitment and evolution of some of these guys, but he wasn't necessarily the primary recruiter.

Don’t pretend like he has no input in the guys that they recruit for his position.

Coach Caldwell is nearing the close of his career so lay off the unwarranted criticism of him alone. Do any of those doubting his reputation have a clue how plain difficult it is to find, recruit and then develop OL on a consistent basis? How ten win seasons in a row does Dabo and staff have? Everybody herein knows the answer so quit nitpicking and relish this coaching regime because we could do a whole lot worse!

Dabo is keenly aware of our OL recruiting woes, but we still have the season to showcase Clemson and therefore I trust we will get matters done. Should Caldwell chose to retire I suspect Thomas Austin or someone else familiar with the program will take his place.

Go Tigers ??!!

Our lack of an OLine caused KB to get a concussion in Syracuse and were absolutely obliterated against Bama last year - this is a consistent issue and something that simply needs to be fixed ASAP.
