There’s no way he can catch that ball, turn and take a shot. That was before the red light on backboards etc. don’t think it’d be good today...
But if he just stepped in front and slapped it away. Had just as much right to the ball as anyone.
- just had to go there didn’t he!

Getting ready for playing in the Elite 8 ... then ... ugh!

That shot should have never counted.
It was basically robbery, but it took a one in a million sequence of events for it even to occur.
Probably the worse reversal of fortune in the history of Clemson sports.

I never have understood why Clemson allowed UCON to complete such a long pass in the first place. Lousy defense IMO.

If you watch the game replay, Elden Campbell contests the inbounds pass pretty effectively, but we play very soft on the other end ... probably in fear of getting called for a foul and letting them win the game at the FT line. We only applied token pressure on the shot.
But, still, it shouldn't have counted and it wouldn't have counted with the improved timing equipment and close video review used today.

I'd have returned that television straight away!
I was actually at the regionals in Dallas that day. They posted scores/updates of other games on the board and I followed as the Tigers clawed their way into the lead. Then the final went up...it wasn't until later I saw the 'inconvenient truth' of the game's ending. As others have noted...that shot wouldn't have counted today, but back then, it was the longest second in recorded human history...outside of the final seconds of the '72 Olympics basketball game.

That was like watching a replay of my divorce proceedings. Did not really need to see that again. Was at my Dad's house in Blacksburg, SC. Eldon Campbell was flat footed on the inbounds play. With a little effort on the baseline, nobody could have thrown that pass the length of the court.

Probably the most unbelievable moment in Clemson sports history. I think I recall the announcer saying something to the effect that less the 1.0 seconds and you wouldn’t have time to get a shot off. I think..... That was a gut wrenching moment! Still don’t believe he had enough time to get that shot off on the play. I’m sure Ellis told the entire team to not foul which was the right call. Regardless, an incredible pass and shot. A dagger for the Clemson program, though.

I was still a student then. Pretty sure it was spring break. At a party in NMB, SC with a bunch of other Clemson students. Party died after that shot.
