It Was A Long Trip But I Think I Survived

Oct 8, 2019, 6:49 PM

Arrived in Petroskey, MI, last Thursday night and had a grand time attending the wedding of a great niece. Lots of Notre Dame grads and a few Ohio State fans and distributed my usual supply of Tiger Paws. Was 95 when we left Clemson and down to 34 F on Saturday AM in Petroskey, a difference of 61 F. Left there on Sunday AM and went by Central Michigan and Michigan State. Both schools have beautiful campuses.

Then over to Pittsburgh for a stop at Carnegie/Mellon. I was there in late 1943 and early 1944 when the Army sent me there to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). Was my first time back since 1986 and hardly recognized the place. So many new buildings. I did see the old Thistle Hall where I lived but it is now the Gymnasium. Also saw the old Margaret Morrison Carnegie College which was a part of Carnegie Tech back in the old days. Pitt Univ.is nearby but did not stop as traffic was a nightmare. T took us about 30 minutes to go about 10 blocks. Driving by Duquesne was a snap. Also drove by Heinz Field but did not stop.

What did the O310 St fans have to say about the Paws? Finebum and Herbie have been pumping them up lately.

Yep, Linda and I shared the driving. A little over 2,200 miles. Somewhere in Michigan we saw a sign, "Willis Road, Next Exit". I told Linda we should check it out, it might be a relative of LBB and they may invite us to stay for lunch.

The most unusual accident was near the junction of I-26 and I-40 near Asheville. I don't know how it happened but a van was straddled over a guard rail at a 90 degree angle. A sedan sitting nearby was crushed in on the front. Traffic was backed up for quite some time and being anxious to move we didn't spend time trying to figure out all the details, I left that chore for the highway patrolmen.

Rained every day during our trip and wished I could have brought some to Clemson.

you were fairly close to Mackinac Island

one of my favorite places in the world. Have you ever been there? I love the peacefulness of the island. No cars allowed helps.

I have been there a couple of times so didn't go this time. One of my grandsons and his family went while in the area and had a grand time. Not as many tourists there at this time of year. I believe the horses are moved off the island at the end of the month.

of course you are right about not being tourist season this time of year. I live in Houston now and as hot as it has been I forgot about the seasonality of the north.

Sounds like a great trip - Joe .... My daughter and wife were involved in an Olympics of the Mind competition held at Central Michigan in 1987 ... Have many fond memories of the school and campus ... -<img border=">

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!
