a ring. Not materialistic otherwise, but she knows what I make and has planted the seed that I need to spend 2-3 months of my salary. I'm at the bottom of the min acceptable salary for a junger, which means that 15-20k is what I'm looking at.
Talk me out of saving this much money for a worthless ring.

Bear in mind that this chick is pretty cool. Great poosay, great wit/personality, cute rather than hot (not as likely to be a sloot later down the road), country, wants a simple life other than trips to TJ Maxx.
Help me out here. Not that I plan to any time soon, but she wants it.

ring back to the shop and had it upgraded after the wedding...I think he bought it at Diamonds Direct for $10k in 2006 and they have some kind of upgrade policy for people just like her. Her father is a multi-millionaire who pays her $100k plus a year to be his assistant and she probably paid for the upgrade herself, but out of principal, I would be pist....until I got a nice check from the FiL then I wouldn't GAF.

Not necessary that she "wants" a 20k ring.
I haven't worded things very well...but she's not that bad and has said that she would accept something from a cracker jack box.
But I do see yall's point about setting the bar too high and creating a cents of entitlement.

$5500-$6500 gets you a good quality 1 carat diamond and nice band. Any more is a total waste, because you won't be able to tell any difference just by looking at it. Seriously, I looked at a $4k stone and a $10k stone, and I could not tell the difference at all. Even with the little microscope, I was like lol, wut?? Why ##### would anyone pay that much more?

about it. It was a little under a carat, but I went for high quality in cut and clarity and the platinum setting. She never asked me what it was worth and I haven't told her, but I don't think she cares at all.

cost, I made copies of the appraisal just for her, and I call it "My Crownline". She made out like a bandit, my ring was only $100.
Now she wants a new car, and I do too, but I just keep reminding her of what her childhood fantasies cost in the real world.

If you want to spend it, a big ### ring can be had for $10k.
Shop loose diamonds locally or on the exchanges and then have a local jeweler make the setting.

Take her to a romantic dinner, and just before dessert arrives you drop to one knee, and then wrap one of those useless Hayes Carll tickets around her finger.

Just based on reading that single post, I feel obliged to inform you that this woman is going to cost you much, much more money than 2-3 month's salary.
Son, a woman that lays down expectations of how much you should spend for her ring has a sense of entitlement that will only increase with time.

But I've never even thought about buying an engagement ring and am not yet saving, so I we were just chatting one day and I kind of jokingly asked how much was someone supposed to spend on one. She had her computer out and Googled it, and 2-3 months was the answer she found.
I don't think she honestly expects that much, and 15-20k sounded high to me. I'm actually relieved to learn that spending that much is batshit insane because I was getting worried.

Dood, no way. Let me tell you how this progresses....Engaged, check. You start planning a wedding, wait until you see those expenses. Then she's gonna want a bigger house. It's at that point you're gonna be like gotdam why'd I spend that much on a fuggin ring?!? So you're stuck for 2-3 years in a ######## because you overspent on a ring. She may even want a bigger SUV...Nope, spent that money on a ring.
That's a crazy, crazy amount of money.

They don't cut you a check for a lost or stolen ring.
They replace the diamond with an equivalent diamond.
If they insure it for $6k, they know they can buy it wholesale for $2,500.
Diamonds are a scam. Insurance on diamonds is a scam.
