Coleman Opposed to Pregame Handshake Ceremony
It seems just about everyone agrees that Saturday night’s handshake ceremony before the state’s annual gridiron grudge match between Clemson and South Carolina players and coaches is a good idea -- unless your Clemson defensive back Duane Coleman. Full Story » |

shaking hands is normal.
I'm not trying to be naive and act as though our players will like each other afterwards, but IMO it is a positive gesture that should be made considering the embarrassment BOTH schools experienced from poor sportsmanship (on BOTH sides) last year.

of them getting out there and shaking hands. To me it does nto matter on tv they will prob show like 2 seconds of it and talk about the fight from last year. Im just saying if someone punched another player and started another big brawl like last year that cost us going to a bowl i hope tommy is man enough to tell him to leave and not come back.

I think Coleman is 100% right. Let's put last year behind us and play ball. Let's all be good sports and play the game. Forget the handshake, totally stupid.

for saying exactly what I was feeling. Who the heck wants to see a forced handshake that nobody really cares about or wants to do. The players don't like those guys, and no handshake will change that. This is just another distraction before the game for the guys to have to worry about. Play football, play it the right way, and leave the politically correct BS at home.

From a player's prospective...the handshake is dumb
Nov 17, 2005, 8:23 AM
|
|
It is generally not sincere. The only meaningful handshakes are between the players that actually know each other or were former teammates. So many players shake hands so administrators and fans can feel good about themselves and what good gentlemen are on the team.
Duane makes a good obervation; the handshake is simply window dressing with very little real substance. So, if it lacks any real meaning, why run the risk of creating an opportunity for a very small minority on either team to misbehave and create a new story for our state's reporters to preach about for a year. But we live in a world that cares more about the appearance than the substance. We care more about whether you drive a Lexus or a Hummer, than if you can actually write a check for the car.
But, the real reason is so both univeristy presidents and ADs can go to a meeting with the other presidents and ADs and get an "atta boy."

While I do think that it puts on a good front for both schools, it also just provides an opportunity for something to happen. You can't tell me that when all those guys get together at midfield to shake hands that nobody is going to start jawing back and forth with each other. Glad to know how much both the ADs like boosting their resumes.
