just to remind..Ben Pitchfork Tillman shot the editor of The State newspaper on the corner of Gervais and Main Streets. Gonzalez fell to the street and Tillman put his Lugar back into his pocket and walked away. He died from gangrene caused by the stomach wound. Tillman was a crazy man.

Yep it wasnt an enlightened age but he does seem especially mean and crazy. He slugged some other Senator on the Senate floor once I believe. Maybe the ill temper had to do with only having one time

It's unclear about Ben Tillman's college education. The summary that comes up when you Google him says University of South Carolina. However, I saw where the coots say he planned to attend UofSC but never did. If he did go to UofSC, it's pretty funny he put a chicken curse on his alma mater, plus having a coot's name on our iconic building doesn't seem right (yes, I realize there would likely be no Clemson without him).
Benjamin Tillman American Politician
Description DescriptionBenjamin Ryan Tillman was an American politician of the Democratic Party who served as Governor of South Carolina from 1890 to 1894, and as a United States Senator from 1895 until his death in 1918. Wikipedia Born: August 11, 1847, Trenton, SC Died: July 3, 1918, Washington, D.C. Party: Democratic Party Education: University of South Carolina Children: Sophia Oliver Tillman, Benjamin Ryan Tilman III, MORE Books: Independence of Cuba. No Reconstruction Or Carpetbag Government Under Pretense of Patriotic Motives
Wikipedia details page isn't too clear either: From an early age, Ben showed a developed vocabulary. In 1860, he was sent to Bethany, a boarding school in Edgefield where he became a star student, and he remained there after the American Civil War began. In 1863, he came home for a year to help his mother pay off debts. He returned to Bethany in 1864, intending a final year of study prior to entering the South Carolina College (today, the University of South Carolina). The South's desperate need for soldiers ended this plan. In June 1864, not yet 17, Tillman withdrew from the academy, making arrangements to join a coastal artillery unit. These plans were scuttled as well when he fell ill at home.

Would this fall under the category of “Germans?” Asking for a friend.

Are we even allowed to refer to old news as "Germans" any longer? Surely the folks of German descent are offended by this.

Very true. Folks in Germany are probably rioting and looting in protest because they feel disrespected by us on T-net. I feel awful now. We need to think of a different term.

No, Gonzalez was unarmed. He wrote a bad article about Tillman and in it, he called him derogatory names.

I went back and re-read the article and found that you are correct. His nephew was the Lt. Gov. and is the one that killed Gonzalez. My apology.
