Should the US do anything to address the crisis in Crimea?

Oct 28, 2020, 1:07 PM

We didn't during the Obama administration and we didn't during Trump's 4 years.

Was that the right choice?

Obama failed on a lot of levels during that crisis.

Oct 28, 2020, 1:29 PM [ in reply to Way too late to do anything after Obama ]

The worst result is how weak we looked as Russia ran all over our treaty with Ukraine and we did nothing. Granted, it could have sparked a world war had we responded with military--but technically, that's what we should have done. We had a treaty with them, Russia said #### your treaty, and then they conquered territory. We looked weak as hell, and I don't think I have to give a history lesson to show what happens when you don't stand up to dictators who try to grab land here and there.

Somebody bookmark this post for all the imbeciles here who try to call me a leftist Dem who loved Obama. Paging T3Tiger to the thread.

Russia has a smaller economy than California. They wouldn't risk going to war with us. We would crush them in weeks.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which is more the reason...

Oct 28, 2020, 2:14 PM

We should have had a stronger response. Putin stared down Obama, and Obama blinked. As a result, we left a nation out to dry and didn't make good on our treaty with them. That also doesn't send a great message to allies.

What made us look weak to our Allies was when Obama drew a line in the sand and Syria crossed the line and there were only crickets.

Are you an idiot? If Russia, the US or China start to lose a war with any of them then nuks will be the last option and will use that option. Have you ever heard what the US policy was in West Germany during the cold war? Well let me inform you. Russia had more armor in the area and their would have been no way to stop them from going into West German. The policy was to use tactical nuks to stop them.

The US and Europe imposed some strict sanctions.

Oct 28, 2020, 1:16 PM

We've also been providing aid to Ukraine, except when Trump withholds it in order to blackmail them into investigating his political opponent.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good question. Not sure what more can be done.

Oct 28, 2020, 1:45 PM

I’m all in favor of any additional sanctions on Russia we’d want to impose. A direct military action seems completely inappropriate at this point. At the very least we can help shore up any defenses for any potential future targets, I guess?

Since you started this thread just curious if you had an opinion?

Honestly I don't know enough to have an opinion about it. I remember it was a big deal for a short time and then people stopped talking about it.

The Russian had a naval base in Crimea. That is their only access to the Black Sea. Russia would not have given up that base without a big time fight. Obama could have given the Ukraine the weapons to fight the Russians but chose not to. Trump got them the weapons.

Re: Good question. Not sure what more can be done.

That was a big part of the aid he got impeached on. There were delays in getting Ukraine the weapon because it had to be approved from the Pentagon.

Just an FYI, it's Ukraine, not "the Ukraine".

(Yes, Obama did refer to the country with the article in front of the name & he was in the wrong.)
